Third surf rescue in three weeks

Man rescued near jetty by Coast Guard, Ocean Shores Police and Fire also respond

In the third surf rescue during the past three weeks, the Ocean Shores Police and Fire Departments along with the U.S. Coast Guard were called out Tuesday afternoon by a report of a man who had gone into the water no longer being visible at the south end of the jetty.

The call came in at 1:45 p.m. and responding firefighters and police “searched through binoculars where it was reported that the man entered the water; a foot crew was sent out along the jetty and a rescue unit went north several hundred yards to search for the victim,” according to a Fire Department news release.

Two Coast Guard boats arrived on scene within 10 minutes and then a Coast Guard helicopter another five minutes after that.

“Not long after the helicopter arrived, one of the Coast Guard boats located and retrieved the victim from the water just south of the jetty tip. They took the victim back to Coast Guard station Grays Harbor in Westport,” the news release said.

The victim was transported via helicopter to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for further treatment for undisclosed injuries.

“This is the third surf/water rescue in three weeks in Ocean Shores. OSFD would like to remind all citizens of the dangers of the ocean here in our area and to remember to practice safe habits when enjoying the waterways and/or the ocean this summer,” the Fire Department news release said.
