NCN911: Young dead whale washes ashore

Female Humpback Likely killed when entangled in crab pots; local police call logs

Scientists this week have conducted a necropsy on a dead humpback whale that washed ashore Sunday off the Damon Road beach approach in Ocean Shores.

The cause of death was determined to be crab pot entanglement, according to the Cascadia Research Collective, which said the 28-foot juvenile female whale appeared healthy before getting tangled in the crabbing gear off the Washington coast.

The dead whale was seen floating off shore Friday and was reported to the Coast Guard. It was found washed ashore Sunday morning.
