NCN911: Arrest in parking lot robbery

March statistics show rise in burglaries

A 21-year old Ocean Shores man was arrested for robbery on Saturday April 30 after allegedly forcing an 18-year old victim to give him money in the parking lot of the IGA.

At about 11 a.m. on April 30, witnesses reported seeing a man chasing another man through the parking lot of Ocean Shores IGA. When he caught the victim, the suspect allegedly struck him and demanded money. The victim handed over what cash he had in his pocket, and the suspect left, police said in a news release.

Officers responded and interviewed the victim and the witnesses. The suspect was located at a nearby house and arrested. “He denied taking any money from the victim, and stated that the altercation was over a cell phone he had sold to the victim,” said Sgt. David McManus.

The suspect was booked into the Grays Harbor County Jail for investigation of Robbery 2 (commonly referred to as “strong arm robbery”), McManus said. The case will be reviewed by the Grays Harbor County Prosecutor’s Office before any formal charges are filed.

March statistics

The monthly Ocean Shores Police Department statistical information confirms what a number of locals have been noticing of late — burglary reports soared in March.

There were 17 burglaries reported in March, according to the latest monthly report, with April just now complete. In February, there were just three burglary reports, and nine in January, with two of those solved or “cleared.”

Beach incidents more than doubled for the month, with 33 reports, compared to 17 in February and 14 in January.

Assaults also were up noticeably in March, with 12 reports (five in February). Seven of the assaults were cleared.

For the year, there have been three robberies, one in each of the first three months, of the total 112 Class-A crimes; no homicides or rapes and just three stolen automobiles. The biggest category of Class-A offenses was theft (51 with five cleared), followed by burglary (29 cases with two cleared), and assaults (27).
