On the Beach: Celebrate Easter with family traditions

Column by Daniela Werner

Easter week is finally here. A bit later on the calendar than the last few years, but that did give us a few more weeks for Easter basket shopping! Do you have traditions in your family to celebrate the special holiday? Do you have the kids or grandkids over and color Easter eggs? With those kits from the grocery store, you know the ones with the fizzy little tablets that you put in vinegar water. Then color on the egg with that clear waxy crayon, so the dye won’t stick to the egg. Do you remember to punch the little holes out of the dye kit box so you have a drying rack for the eggs? My girls always wanted the glitter egg kits. You know the ones that leave glitter on your counter for weeks. They were definitely worth the smiles on their faces after their sparkly creations dried. My son always dipped the eggs in all the colors so he ended up with grey or brown eggs. But he liked them that way. Even though they are all grown and out of the house I still buy them an Easter bunny or two. And mail them off. In a few more years I’ll get to visit and experience a grandchild coloring eggs for the first time. And you better believe I’m going to bring a glitter egg kit. Because that’s what G’mas do.

Here at the beach we have a lot of great choices for Easter activities, so let’s hop to sharing them.

On Sunday April 16th the Ocean Shores Fire Department will be hosting its annual egg hunt at the Ocean Shores Elementary school from 1-3 pm. Fun for kids of all ages, and even an adult hunt with a $25 prize egg.

Head over to Emily’s at the Quinault Beach Resort and Casino for a spectacular Easter Brunch. Served from 10:30 until 3 p.m. Selections include: prime rib, salmon and of course ham. Seafood including crab and oysters. Stuffed French toast among the sweets and eggs prepared in so many ways, we can’t even begin to list them! Last seating at 2:30 and reservations are recommended. Or stop by the IGA and pick up your fresh ham and tender asparagus for your own Easter buffet at home.

Stop by the Ocean Shores Bakery and get a special treat, and call Brenda at Artistic Creations for a spring center piece for the table.

Looking to attend a church service for Easter Sunday? Faith Community Church offers services at both 9:30 and 11 a.m. St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Hogan’s corner has Mass at 11.

Don’t forget the little things this Easter, their favorite jelly beans, some new hair ribbons, the kids will remember them and miss them after they move out. And go ahead and buy the glitter egg kit. It’s worth the smiles.
