On the Beach: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Column by Daniela Werner

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for “Fifth of May” is a celebration with the drinking of margaritas and tequila shots. It’s a little like St. Patrick’s Day, where everyone is Irish on March 17th, and on May 5th, everyone loves tacos.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico’s Independence Day. I hate to break it to you, but that’s not really the reason for celebration. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. So, there is still a reason to celebrate.

Even better news, the actual Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th, so two great reasons to wear the Sombrero, drink margaritas and cheer, Ole’!

Did you know we have a Yacht Club in Ocean Shores? So maybe none of the members actually have a yacht, it’s a great group of boating enthusiasts.

You can reach them at osycinfo@juno.com

There is also a Facebook Page “On the Water- Ocean Shores” that will begin listing meet ups for paddling and boating get-togethers.

One important thing to remember is that wearing a life jacket while boating is as important as wearing a seatbelt while driving in a car.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard Statistics, 84 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

At any age, wear your lifejacket during any boating activity — especially, if you celebrate Cinco de Mayo the night before.

This week, let’s all raise a margarita to life here “On the Beach.”
