The Ocean Shores fire station on Pt. Brown Ave. was “full of young families,” exclaimed new Fire Chief David Bathke, at the conclusion of the Fire Department’s open house, held Thursday evening, October 12.

“This is Fire Prevention Week; I’ve always done an open house,” he said. “These guys all worked very hard putting this together,” he continued, gesturing toward the OSFD personnel who were on hand working the various activities and demonstrations.

The event had something for everyone, with several educational displays including the Ocean Shores Public Library, Oyhut Bay emergency preparedness, information on free smoke detectors, the local Citizens Emergency Response Team, plus popcorn, hot dogs and other refreshments. Rite Aid from Aberdeen was on hand to offer flu shots.

A highlight was the opportunity for kids to don firefighter costumes and pose for pictures beside one of the fire engines.

The evening also included demonstrations behind the fire station, of vehicle extrication techniques including use of the “jaws of life,” and attacking and extinguishing a vehicle fire.

OSFD personnel went to Ocean Shores Elementary School earlier Thursday for a demonstration and Chief Bathke credits that with bringing in many of the more than 100 local folks who enjoyed the open house event. The Fire Department hosts a Halloween Party Oct. 31 at the Convention Center.
