Coast Calendar: Show N’ Shine, Brew Fest and Bloodhounds

Busy month of October starts with annual car show at QBRC, beer tasting at Seabrook

The ninth Annual Show N’ Shine At The Shores car show, this Friday and Saturday at Quinault Beach Resort &Casino, brings more than 200 custom cars and vintage vehicles to the North Coast.

Tony Halekakis, Car Show Chairman and VP of the Pushrods of Hoquiam, said the show is one of three the local non-profit car club produces annually. He explained that the group began in 1953, has over 100 members, and actively raises money for charities across Grays Harbor County. In 2010 they were inducted into the Hotrod Hall of Fame.

He expects 150 to 200 “guest cars” to be registered for a friendly competition for about 30 awards, with $2,500 in prizes. As event hosts, Pushrods of Hoquiam members cannot compete, but Halekakis said many of them will bring their own collector cars as well.

Among those competing is Ed Duncan, who owns HiGrade Asphalt, based near Federal Way, but with a satellite office on Minard Avenue in Ocean Shores. That’s where Duncan keeps a collection of custom cars, memorabilia and more. Halekakis refers to the place as “Ed’s playpen.”

A member of the Ocean Shores Beach Boys Car Club, Duncan won Best in Show at the event last year, but said he was going to “give others a chance” this year and not enter anything. However, he has had his eye on a “sure show winner,” a rare 1954 Corvette, owned by longtime Pushrods member and Ken’s Body Shop owner Ken Strom in Hoquiam.

As a Pushrods member, Strom couldn’t enter the car in the competition. But Duncan believed it will win, and just last Friday persuaded Strom to sell it to him, so he can put it in this weekend’s show at the casino.

Participants have been registering online at www.pushrods.org, and vehicle registration at the event will begin at 12 noon Friday. The registration fee is $20 per vehicle and participants receive goodie bags and are eligible for various prizes to be announced every 15 minutes during event hours, from 12 – 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

A Poker Run will start at 1 p.m. Friday at the casino. It will go down the Ocean Shores peninsula to the Coastal Interpretive Center near Damon

Point, make some stops on Pt. Brown Ave. and go up to the Green Lantern in Copalis Beach before returning to QBRC. Awards will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The event is free for spectators and the public is invited.

The event is emceed again by the host of “The Vintage Vehicle Show,” Lance Lambert. Johnny Manson, “Morning Madness” host on KJET-FM in Aberdeen, will co-host. Inside will be merchandise, displays and the Hot Rod Cafe, with hot dogs, beer, and root beer floats.

Show N Shine At The Shores is one of three annual events produced by Pushrods of Hoquiam. They also do “High Rolling Hot Rods” at QBRC in April, and the July “Riverside Run Revival” in Hoquiam. Halekakis said the club gives up to 90% of its annual revenue to area charities.

Big Foot Brew Fest

Seabrook is hosting the fifth annual Big Foot Brew Fest on Oct. 7, featuring 14 Northwest breweries, food trucks and live music. Events benefit the Seabrook Community Foundation.

Breweries include Fort George, Seattle Cider Co., Two Beers, Fish Tale, Top Rung, 10 Barrel, Hop Valley, 3 Magnets, Upright, Triceratops, Matchless, Steam Donkey, Hoquiam and a mobile spirit tasting room from Wishkah River Distillery. VIP ticket is $40. The event will feature live music from Mountainess, based out of Olympia; Old Coast, based out of Seattle; and Shannon DeLong and Chris Eakes, based out of Allyn.

Convention Center events

The primary tourist season may be over, but October brings a busy month to the Ocean Shores Convention Center with an eclectic mix of private and public events, some new and others returning annual favorites on the North Coast.

The month also includes a couple of private religious gatherings, including a three-day family education conference that is expected to draw 1,000 to 1,200 attendees.

Convention Center manager Cheryl Turner said these are some of the conference-type events that “make up the bulk of our occupancy,” while the event mix in October offers examples of “so many of the diversified events that come here throughout the year, in addition to our two annual arts &crafts shows.”

Toward the end of the month will be two of the area’s most loved events. Four days of live music with Galway Bay’s 14th annual Celtic Music Festival run October 26-29 and the month concludes with the annual Ocean Shores Firefighters Association’s kids Halloween party, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31.

And then there’s the first time for the “Bloodhound Beach Bash,” which will occupy the entire Convention Center from October 10-14. This is an American Bloodhound Club (ABC) “National Specialty” dog show, plus a Regional Specialty show and several other event elements, including two days of bloodhound trailing activities in and around Ocean Shores.

The last two days will be open to the public.

The event is produced by the Pacific Rim Bloodhound Club (PRBC), which has members in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, British Columbia, and Alberta, Canada.

Show chairperson Cindy Wolfrom of Olympia said she expects 80 or more dogs and about twice as many humans to participate in the event.
