Paddle the Shores

The Paddle the Shores event for human-powered watercraft over Labor Day weekend will be held Sept. 2 at a new location — Oyhut Bay. In addition to the popular Poker Paddes, activities will include 2- and 6-mile races, a rubber duck pond and races for kids, a cardboard boat race, Quinault Nation paddle exhibition, as well as a music festival at the new Oyhut Bay outdoor amphitheater. Participants are asked to bring their own personal floating device as well as a whistle, and entry is $15 per person and $27 with an event shirt. Donations from local merchants are still being accepted at the Oyhut Bay Rental Office, or call Bruce Malloy at (206) 818-4118 for more information. The event starts at 9 a.m. with registration and concludes withe cardboard boat races at 3 p.m. and awards and raffles at 4:30.

Friday community meal

The Grace Cafe is open each Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a free Community Meal at Galilean Lutheran Church, 824 Ocean Shores Blvd. NW in Ocean Shores. Volunteers serve folks at their tables and the menu changes each week. The menu for Friday, Aug. 25 is homemade tomato basil soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, dessert and beverage. North Beach Singers

The local choral group presents “The Best of North Beach Singers, part 1” with a pizza night on Monday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Galilean Lutheran Church in Ocean Shores. Practice continues Mondays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. starting Sept. 11. Concert dates in December ar Dec. 8, 9, 16. For more information, call (360) 289-4499 or (360) 500-6952.

Ice cream social

The Ocean Shores United Methodist Church hosts a free ice cream social on Friday Aug. 25. Ice cream is served from 6:30-8:30 at the church, 557 Pt. Brown Ave. NW.

Quinault Craft Fair

The Lake Quinault Community Circle will host a Craft Fair and Bake Sale on Sunday, Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in Amanda Park on Highway 101 just north of Lake Quinault. Artists and craftsmen from around the Olympic Peninsula will display a variety of hand- crafted jewelry, woodwork, arts, photography, gifts and crafts reflective of the Pacific Northwest culture.

Fresh herbs, produce, honey and home-made baked goods will also be for sale. Live music will entertain attendees as well. This event is one of many planned by the Lake Quinault Community Circle.

Spay/neuter clinics

North Beach PAWS free spay/neuter clinics for pets of low-income North Beach residents will be held on Sept. 2 and Sept. 23. Call Debby at (360) 289-0586 afternoons to schedule your sign-up appointment on Aug. 30 or Sept. 20. Verification of address and low-income status will be required at sign-up. Some breed/age and other restrictions apply. The clinics are paid for by The Albohn Family Foundation and done in partnership with Dr. Stacy Steele and the Ocean Shores Animal Hospital staff.

PAWS annual event

The North Beach PAWS annual fundraising dinner & auction will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Ocean Shores Convention Center. Organizers are looking for donations of items (new or like-new condition) and services for the auction. Especially in need of “large ticket” items for the live auction part of the event. • Answers for All (AFA) meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Ocean Shores Elks Lodge, 199 Ocean Lake Way SE. Join for coffee and conversation about Ocean Shores, the North Beach and the county.

• Ocean Shores Councilwoman Holly Plackett holds a weekly no-host coffee hour every Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Ocean Grill, located at the Quinault Sweet Grass Hotel on 845 Ocean Shores Blvd NW.

• Ocean Shores Lions Club meets at noon on the second and fourth Thursdays in the Lions Club building, 832 Ocean Shores Blvd. NW.

• Ocean Shores Kiwanis meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month at noon at Alec’s by the Sea, 131 E. Chance a La Mer NE.

• The North Beach Senior Center and Thrift Store is located at 885 Ocean Shores Blvd. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; breakfast on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• The Ocean Shores Food Bank at 848 Anchor Ave. NW provides distributions of food on the first and third Thursday of every month, from 1:30 until 5 p.m. To make arrangements for transportation or food delivery, call Mitch at 309-236-4896 or Galilean Lutheran Church, 360-289-3313. Emergency food is available Monday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. by requesting assistance at the Anchor Avenue Thrift Store.

• The Copalis Community Church Food Bank is at 3140 State Route 109. Open every Wednesday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

• VFW 8956 of the North Beach meets at 6 p.m. on the first Monday of the month at 953 Trent Court SE, Ocean Shores.

• North Beach Senior Resource Center and the Olympic Area Agency on Aging have a Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisor every Thursday, noon to 2 p.m. at Ocean Shores United Methodist Church, 557 Point Brown Ave. NW.

• Women Helping Women – Women sharing resources, information, support and friendship – meets at noon on the second Friday of each month at the Shilo Inn on the fourth floor. No-host lunch and speaker. Call 289-3880.

• PAWS volunteers. If you love animals and have an hour and a half to spare each week helping at the shelter taking care of dogs or cats, call Lorna at 360-289-2924.

• The Ocean Shores Animal Shelter needs volunteers a few hours a month to care for lost, stray or abandoned animals. Stop by the police station for an application.
