‘Book a Techie’ for computer help at OS Library

New program for assistance to the public

By SCOTT D. JOHNSTON

The Ocean Shores Public Library is launching a new program that will offer free help with patrons’ laptops, tablets, e-readers, smart phones and other technologically challenging devices.

“Book a Techie,” Library Director Keitha Owen explained, “is an opportunity to share conversation with a library staff member (who is a) technology specialist. The library is constantly, and I reiterate constantly, being asked to help patrons with all things technology. So, this is an absolutely essential service for the library to provide.”

She also noted, “Adults tend to be a bit shy about just starting to push buttons on their devices for fear of the consequences. That is another perfect reason to offer this program.”

The library’s “Techie” is 23-year-old Nick Bishop, a 2013 graduate of Elma High School who went on to earn BA degree at Evergreen State College in Olympia. He has been a techie for family and friends’ devices for several years and has offered that type of help since he first began volunteering at the Ocean Shores Library in 2015.

Now a part-time employee, he will attempt to deal with “any kind of question people have” about their devices, “as long as something is not physically wrong.” In other words, he’s happy to tackle all kinds of software and system issues but cannot fix a fried motherboard or a shattered screen.

There are two basic requirements: you must have a current library card and you must sign up at the library at least seven days in advance, with a brief description of what you wish to learn or resolve. Bishop will review your request and you will be contacted prior to your appointment. Patrons can book 30-minute sessions on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons.

The library started taking bookings July 17 for sessions one week later, on July 24. More information is available online at www.oslibrary.info and at 360-289-3919.
