Details surface in murder at Hoquiam motel

New details about the events surrounding the fatal stabbing of Armando Carlos Reyes, on Feb. 28 in east Hoquiam, reveal more about what led to his death.

Despite numerous rounds of CPR and emergency care from Hoquiam Police Department and Hoquiam paramedics, Reyes died after Michael Anthony Trujillo, 33, of Hoquiam, allegedly stabbed Reyes outside a room at Oceanside Motel in east Hoquiam.

On Wednesday, March 2, Grays Harbor Superior Court Judge Dave Edwards found cause to charge Trujillo with second-degree murder for killing Reyes, 25, of Hoquiam, who was the manager at the motel. Edwards also found cause to charge Trujillo with second-degree theft for stealing an iPhone 11 that belonged to Reyes.

Trujillo is being held on $750,000 bail at Grays Harbor County Jail, where he was transferred on March 1.

Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers revealed the previously unknown details that on-scene witnesses observed on March 3 in a Hoquiam Police Department Facebook post.

“Witnesses to the stabbing provided a clothing description of the suspect,” Myers wrote. “One witness on the phone with 911 actually followed as the suspect ran westbound from the motel.”

The Daily World reported March 2 that Hoquiam Police Officer Christian Slater stopped Trujillo from fleeing the crime scene before other officers responded to the call, which was made at 2:48 p.m on Feb. 28.

“Slater spotted the suspect in the 400 block of 24th Street,” Myers’ post states. “When (Trujillo) saw the patrol car, he turned and ran towards the nearby alley.”

Slater then detained Trujillo, who matched the witness description, until other officers arrived to take him into custody.

Trujillo had been staying at the hotel since his release from prison in January, the post states.

When an animal control officer and a Hoquiam detective arrived, which were the first HPD units to arrive at the motel, Myers stated, one of the officers performed CPR on Reyes.

The detective continued performing CPR on Reyes until Hoquiam paramedics arrived, according to the post.

The paramedics provided additional emergency treatment to Reyes at the scene, “as officers and detectives responded to the scene,” according to Myers. While YMCA of Grays Harbor was notified of what was going on, it was not locked down because Trujillo was already in custody. The YMCA is located about 500 feet from the Oceanside Motel.

According to Myers’ post, several witnesses who were apparently staying at the motel yelled that Reyes had been stabbed and both men had tumbled down the stairs.

“It appeared Reyes had suffered multiple puncture wounds and may also have been injured in the fall,” the post states. “A knife was recovered at the scene.”

While Aberdeen Police Department officers were helping Hoquiam police to secure the crime scene perimeter and interview witnesses, the paramedics were working to save Reyes’ life.

“The paramedics continued to perform CPR and administered several rounds of emergency care in an attempt to save Reyes before transporting him to (Harbor Regional Health) Community Hospital,” Myers’ post states.

Once detectives started interviewing Young Kim — the motel’s owner — they learned the incident was caught on security footage, according to court documents filed by Jason Walker, Grays Harbor’s chief criminal deputy prosecutor.

When The Daily World asked Myers why he divulged so much information to the public about the crime and the scene itself, Myers said posting such details was “standard.” He also said his post was an overall summary of the situation.

“(There’s) nothing in particular about this case, this is just (about) being transparent and providing the facts,” Myers wrote in an email.

In addition to investigating the scene on foot, detectives and members of the crime scene mapping team spent several hours processing the scene, Myers’ post states. Law enforcement interviewed witnesses, conducted a 3D FARO scan of the scene and secured a search warrant for the motel room, where the suspect stayed. They also downloaded the security camera footage that showed the attack.

Myers said his officers have been meeting with Reyes’ family, who provided a photo of Reyes and his young children.

He also closed his post with a message for Reyes’ family.

“The (police) department wants to express our deepest condolences to the family of Armando Reyes, including his mother, father and other close family in the community, as well as his girlfriend and their two small children,” the post states.
