North Beach blanked by Rainier in home opener

Mountaineers 48, Hyaks 0

OYEHUT — Rainier jumped to a big early lead in trouncing North Beach in a non-league season opener on Friday.

The Mountaineers put up 28 points in the first quarter by way of their rushing attack and added to their lead in the second with one touchdown on the ground and another through the air. Rainier scored its final touchdown on the ground in the fourth quarter.

While suffering a loss, North Beach head coach Travis Cluckey said there were some positives on defense.

“Dylan Sims and Michael Almenderez did a great job playing their roles, both containing and plugging up holes on the D-line” Cluckey said. “Almenderez was particularly aggressive and really trying to get after it. Sims was doing good at defensive end playing contain.”

Cluckey also noted the play of Patrick Day-Heyd, Marcus Pope, Steven Sotomish, Ben Poplin and Tavo Muro.

“I’m really proud of what the guys did,” Cluckey said. “They worked hard all summer, they played hard tonight and we’re going to work to get better.”

North Beach (0-1) travels to Life Christian Academy on Saturday, Sept. 9.
