North Beach boys fall, girls prevail in basketball season opening games this week

By SCOTT D. JOHNSTON

The boys and girls varsity basketball teams at North Beach High School both opened their seasons Wednesday at Life Christian Academy in Tacoma.

Both teams faced formidable foes as the LCA Eagles boys won the Pacific 2B Coastal league last year and enjoyed a 22-5 season, while the girls were second in the league and 18-7 on the season.

Life Christian Academy dominated the North Beach Hyaks on the boards en route to a 72-36 win in the Hyaks’ season opener Wednesday in Tacoma.

Hyaks coach Larry Moore added that his squad “had some unforced turnovers which hurt, and missed some easy layups. “That said,” he continued, “the kids played hard and fought to the end.” Moore noted that senior Chance Beck “had a good game for us (with) 15 points and 5 rebounds. Kyle Fry did a good job on the boards with 6.”

The Hyaks boys play their home opener South Bend at 7 p.m. this Friday.

Moore has four seniors returning from last year’s 8-15 team that finished sixth in the league and graduated seven players. He looks forward to his 34th year of coaching with a team he said “has a lot of interchangeable parts,” and “a lot of kids that can put the ball in the basket,” more than in the past couple of years.

“They’ve worked really hard in summer basketball, and played really good team basketball,” he said. The team will press more, “because we’re deep,” and “have a lot of hustle.”

As a long-time coach, “what excites me every year is trying to put all the pieces together,” Moore said.

The North Beach team faces a tough schedule, with 18 league games. The only non-conference contests are Dec. 26 at Taholah and a New Year’s Eve tilt when they host Hoquiam at 2:15 p.m.

Lady Hyaks Varsity

Lady Hyaks sophomore Letty Carcaise led the way with 8 points and 12 rebounds as the North Beach girls won their season opener on the road Wednesday, crushing Life Christian Academy 40-8. Senior point guard Adelina Desamours also had 8 points as did senior Jeri Herbrand. Lorin Cox had 5 pts.

“Letty had a great game,” said Lady Hyaks assistant coach Jessica Preisinger. “She hustled on offense and defense, resulting in her rebounds. We expect great things out of her for future games.”

The coach added, “We need to cut down on our turnovers, but overall a great way to start the season. The girls are eager to get back in the gym and prep for South Bend Saturday,” an away game that starts at 7 p.m. Their home opener is at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, against Willapa Valley.

Second year head coach Ron Tinnin predicts the Lady Hyaks “should double the number of wins this year,” over last year’s team that squeaked into the district playoffs and finished the season at 5-16, seventh place in the league.

The group that lost only one senior, Mariah Vogler, “had a great summer – they worked really hard. We should be greatly improved over last year,” Tinnin said.

Preisinger said her girls “are all really athletic.” Players to watch include speedy senior guard Desamours, tough junior Cox, and freshman Mady Eang. She also singled out senior forward Jessy Garman, a “fierce, aggressive player (who) doesn’t mind banging around.”

Tinnin concluded, “These kids are going to be a lot of fun to watch, more skilled and more able to go up and down the court throughout the game.”
