Students honored local veterans — and winners were announced in a pair of youth essay contests sponsored by Ocean Shores VFW Post 8956 — at a Veterans Day assembly last Thursday at Ocean Shores Elementary School.

The school gym was full as VFW members posted the colors and performed a flag-folding ceremony. Student leaders did a mail call for many veterans who were in attendance and others did poetry readings. Four different classes sang hymns for the five branches of U.S. military service. VFW members then recognized all of the OSE students who participated in two patriotic essay contests. Winners of “How the American Flag Makes Me Feel” were Jett York, 1st; Arabella Ramirez, 2nd; Kaylynn Harig, 3rd; and Damian Gallegos, 4th. “Why I Honor the Flag” winners were Elton Rockey, 1st; Keylah Dawson, 2nd; and Katarina Butler, 3rd. The assembly ended with “Taps,” by trumpeters Ben Meyers, Lilia Roldan, Cecilia Trudeau, Dameon Morales, Ms. Emma Eliason, and guitarist Isaac Bighead.
