On the Beach: Enjoy our waterways this spring

Column by Daniela Werner

So, the spring weather might not be doing its part on the coast, but that won’t stop Spring Break from happening. If you’re not planning a getaway from Ocean Shores this Spring Break, how about exploring the waterways?

When was the last time you explored a new canal, paddled or motored around the islands in the middle of Duck Lake? Here you can find nesting blue heron and deer will swim to the island to give birth to their foals. Otter, beaver, seagulls, and other birds are also found on the lake and waterways. It’s the perfect place to canoe, kayak or paddle-board. And fishermen of all ages will be thrilled that Duck Lake is stocked for year ‘round fishing.

There are over 23 miles of beautiful fresh-water lakes and canals to explore. These waterways are maintained by volunteers, mostly of the numerous residents who live along the shores. The Fresh Waterways Corporation is a great group of folks making a difference. They organize work parties and do an amazing job. It’s low cost to join. Find them on Facebook and join a meeting. Boat launch sites include North Bay Park and Chinook Park.

On the South end of Ocean Shores, Oyhut Bay has a small community dock available to access the freshwater canals. Spring plans for The Landing at Oyhut Bay include a Bistro, park and small-craft boat dock to make it easy for residents and guests to enjoy this recreational wonder.

A great way to enjoy the lake and canals is to rent an electric-powered party boat from the Ocean Shores Electric Boat Company. The boats seat ten, come with clear plastic panels that can be closed against the weather (or opened on a nice day), and the canopy overhead provides shade. The boats travel slowly and are easy to drive. Canal Brothers of Ocean Shores is another fun way to take a guided tour. Find them on Facebook!

If you have your own boat, why not join the Ocean Shores Yacht Club. Yes, we really have a Yacht Club. A really fun group that plans get togethers, BBQs and group boating activities. You don’t need a yacht to be a part of this group. They meet at 4 p.m. March 16 at Galway Bay.

The weekend of the 17th is going to be very busy for Ocean Shores, a trifecta and more of activities. The Ocean Shores Razor Clam Festival and Seafood Extravaganza at the Convention Center, Dugan’s Run and a parade on Sunday at 2 p.m. hosted by Galway Bay in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Get ready Ocean Shores, even if the weather isn’t warming up much, we are springing ahead “On the Beach.”
