More than 40 singers performed at the Ocean Shores Convention Center Saturday night with a broad range of songs and styles all performed by barbershop quartets.

Show chair Ted Chamberlain explained the annual winter concert by the Quartet Champions of the Evergreen District (QCED) demonstrates the breadth of the barbershop genre. There were humorous numbers, jazzy renditions and even a four-part harmony take on the “Spiderman” theme.

The international Barbershop Harmony Society has several membership districts with annual competitions, including the Evergreen District, with quartets from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta. In 1972 a group of past Evergreen District champions founded the QCED to promote their style of music. They do two live Quartet Champions concerts annually.

Their winter show has been in Seaside, Oregon, since 1985. QCED president Charlie Boon said the group chose Ocean Shores for this year’s concert because of the beach and the venue: “We need a destination that will draw a good number of performers for a fun weekend.”

For the first time at Ocean Shores, they were adding seats to accommodate the crowd of well over 300 soon after the doors opened.

“It was fantastic,” Boon beamed, noting the enthusiastic response the local audience delivered. He said the group has already booked the same date for next year at the Convention Center.

“It’s been an absolute joy working with the Convention Center staff,” his daughter, Laurie Boon Fowlkes, added.
