Cross country strong

The North Beach Boy’s XC Team finished a solid second in the Pacific League Championships held at Ocosta High School on Thursday, October 22nd. Lead by Senior Derek Moore’s 4th place finish the Hyak harriers finished behind only Northwest Christian, the defending state champions. Moore’s time of 16:23 for the 2.95 mile course was the fastest ever for a Hyak on Ocosta’s course. Sophomore Ben Grover followed Moore in 7th place with a time of 17:02. The newest Hyak runner, Zack Deible, also cracked the top ten in 17:46. Dylan Hearn clocked an 18:30 for 16th, followed closely by Skyler Whipple in 17th (18:43) and Joseph Wagner 18th (18:44). The Hyak team also included Cody James, 21st with a 19:13, John Johnson 25th in 20:14, Anthony Tignino 26th (20:34), Quinton Porter 28th (20:42), and Eric Shepard 30th (23:44).

Senior Leeanna Mong led the Hyak Girl’s contingent with a 20th place finish in a personal best time of 25:53. Megan Leighty finished 24th with a 34:59 and Crystal Lynch was 25th in 37:57.

Football team loses

OYEHUT — Naselle’s run game took over in the second quarter, leading the Comets past North Beach in a Pacific League game Friday at Oyehut.
The 10th-ranked Comets’ offense accounted for 358 yards —all rushing.
“We were decimated by injuries coming in, and took a few more during the game,” said Hyak coach Robin Andrea.
Hyak quarterback Derrick Archer left the game with an injury in the fourth quarter.
Maurice Alfaro led the Hyaks with 71 yards rushing on 14 carries, including a 21-yard score in the first quarter that cut the early deficit to 7-6.
Andrea cited his defense for a strong first-quarter showing.
The Hyaks (1-3, 1-6) travel to rival Ocosta Friday.

Despite the play of Gabbie Makinson, Kaytee Case, Cari Laranang and Tahnee McCrory and nine kills by Elizabeth Thatcher (in action, below), the North Beach Lady Hyaks lost to South Bend, last night in a home match. North Beach plays at Naselle, Thursday night.

In pretty horrible conditions, North Beach falls at home to Willapa Valley, 31-8. Bright moments for the home team: a highlight-reel interception by Joe Ray; a long TD run by Maurice Alfaro; cheerleaders who toughed it out in the rain; fans from both sides who did likewise.

Big football win

Hyaks 64, Seagulls 14
RAYMOND — North Beach erupted for its first victory of the season by walloping Raymond in a Pacific League game Friday night at Raymond.
Kevin Braden, Joe Ray, Maurice Alfaro, and Derek Archer scored touchdowns for the Hyaks (1-1, 1-4). Ray had 100 yards rushing on the night. He was also cited for fine defensive play.
Statistics and individual scoring plays were unavailable.
Josh Lavoie had two interceptions as the Hyaks led 36-8 at the half.
“I was very proud of my offensive line: Matt Jennings, Tyler Reed, Sawyer Reed, Robby Patton, and Robert Buck,” said Hyak coach Robin Andrea.“Matt Crew, Trey Jennings, and Dustin Sanders also did a great job on the offensive line. I was proud of our team effort and we are going to build on our belief in each other.”
Andrea cited Austin Underwood and Ray for fine defensive play North Beach will host Willapa Valley on Friday. Raymond (0-3, 0-6) travels to South Bend on Friday.

Think pink

After a home win last night, the North Beach High volleyball team has a match tonight at Willapa Valley. It’s a breast cancer awareness event, hence the pink on the jerseys.
