Big year for North Beach basketball?
North Beach High’s boys and girls basketball teams each defeated Tenino in season openers last night. The girls won, 61-52, led by Anna Moody (15 points), Nicole Mosley (12 points) and Elizabeth Thatcher (10 points, 12 rebounds). The boys rolled up a 64-48 win, behind Tres Pope’s 23 points, Derek Moore’s 18 and Derek Archer’s 12 points. Complete coverage in The Daily World.
The boys could have trouble with bigger teams, but have the shooting, quickness and athleticism for a potential big season. The girls have size and experience, and last night’s 47% shooting is a great sign. (Both the boys and girls were only 7 of 15 from the foul line.)
The boys and girls basketball teams have a home opening doubleheader this Thursday, vs. Montesano. Tip-off time is 5:45 p.m.

Cross country best-ever sixth in state
From today’s Daily World coverage of the state championship cross country meet, held yesterday in Pasco:
North Beach’s Derek Moore came away with the best finish for any Twin Harbors runner on the day, leading the Hyaks to a sixth place team finish in the B boys meet.
Moore earned a podium spot with a 12th-place finish at 17:50, with South Bend’s Nathan Rogers alsoearning a spot on the podium in 14th at 17:52. The Hyaks’ Ben Grover took 20th at 18:18, with teammates Zack Deibel (39th at 18:37), Skyler Whipple (64th at 19:11) and Cody James (89th at 19:46) scoring for the team.
Hyak coach Rick Leighty was pleased with Moore’s finish as well as the team’s best team finish in school history. “He probably ran a near-perfect race,” said Leighty, who noted that some of the runners were ill. “He settled into the top 15 and, in the last half-mile, started to pluck guys off to finish 12th.
“We set a goal for fourth place, but we’re happy with sixth,” Leighty added.
Mitchell McConkey took 55th place for Ocosta at 18:57, with two North Beach runners finishing, but not scoring for the team — Joseph Wagner (109th at 20:28) and Dylan Hearn (113th at 20:42).
Cross country team to state!
From coach Rick Leighty:
By finishing third in the District IV 2B Cross Country Championships, the Hyak Boys became the first North Beach Cross Country team to qualify two consecutive years for the State. The State Championships will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
The District Championships were held in less than ideal conditions at Evergreen State College on October 31st. The North Beach boys were prepared for the adverse conditions and despite many slips and falls on the soggy, muddy course the Hyaks continued to attack the course and achieved their pre-meet goals. Ben Grover lead the way with a 7th place finish, followed by Derek Moore in 8th and Zach Deibel in 18th. All three finishes would have earned individual trips to the State Meet if the team had not qualified. The four other North Beach runners for the day also had outstanding runs with Skyler Whipple coming home 25th, Joseph Wagner 31st, Dylan Hearn 36th, and Cody James 37th.
Football team loses in brutal conditions
Ocosta defeated North Beach, 38-0, in a wind-blown, rain-drenched football game at Westport last night. According to the Daily World:
The Hyaks (1-4, 1-7) came into the contest shorthanded, just 15 players suited up in the rain. Injuries, according to North Beach coach Robin Andrea, put four freshmen into the starting lineup.
“We had both quarterbacks out and had four more players out of position,” Andrea said. “I thought they did a valiant job under the circumstances. They did well with what we had.”
