Mail scam
From Det. Chris Iversen, Ocean Shores Police Dept:
I received a complaint today regarding a bogus letter and check that an Ocean Shores resident received. The letter was an offer of employment out of the blue as a “Mystery Shopper” and the check ($3,975.00) was an advance payment of sorts. This is the second such letter from the same source that we have been notified of recently in Ocean Shores. This is another one of those scams in which the recipient is advised to deposit the check into their own account. They are then to wire, via Money Gram, a large portion of the funds back to the company after keeping a portion for themselves as “salary.” The recipient is requested to call a number provided in the letter to be given the location to the wire the funds to. More than likely, this will be outside of the U.S. – probably Canada. The checks invariably turn out to be bogus later on and the recipient is held responsible for the amount by their bank.
Do construction rigs get a “free pass”?
Just followed an empty construction truck doing 50 mph on O.S. Blvd., 35 mph limit. Do these dudes get a free ticket to ride in town? (Any concerns about: kids; tourists; wild life?)
From this week’s Police Log:
Aug. 27

“Speeding dump trucks in area. Would like them ticketed.”
Sharky’s bust
From the Ocean Shores Police Dept.:
A 20-year-old Hoquiam man was arrested on August 11, 2009 for the August 5th burglary of Sharky’s. Information was obtained that led to the recovery of some of the stolen property. Det. Iversen was able to interview a possible suspect and the individual confessed to the crime. The suspect was booked in to Grays Harbor County Jail for second degree burglary.
