caller: “I read the Letters to the Editor –
– and I figured, why don’t I call my insurance company?” He did, then called over here, saying he saved $80 on his insurance, thanks to Ocean Shores’ improved fire rating.
Anyone else?

Firefighters union message (posting again)
(Didn’t show up properly in the last post)
Firefighters union message
“The Ocean Shores Professional Firefighters local 2109 has come to an agreement with the City of Ocean Shores after long talks and negotiations. The firefighters have agreed to give up $28,000 for 2009 to keep 11 out of 12 positions. The firefighters are still trying to save the other position that was lost due to the budget shortfalls in the city. The other Firefighter /Paramedic position is contingent on an upcoming EMS type levy or other concessions made by other bargaining unions.
“The firefighters want the citizens to know how vital there emergency medical services are in this rural community. The other vacant position hurts and affects our services dramatically. Our number one priority is the health and safety of the one’s we serve.”

Guest Editorial: Fire Breaks Needed
By Gene Seeley
My wife and I have lived on Sand Dune Avenue SW near the Polaris intersection since 1999. Our living quarters are on the second floor so we have a nice view of the ocean and the dunes between Ocean Lake Way on the north and Taurus Avenue on the south.
On July 4th 2006 and July 4th 2007, large dune fires burned from the beach west of Polaris on the north to Taurus on the south. These fires burned mainly the previous years’ dry salt grass over the same area. See fire-break-diagram. These fires were each about 20 acres. Fireworks smoke trails showed the winds to be out of the north to north/northwest at approximately 20 mph. By the time firemen put out the fires each was about 370 feet from the houses near Taurus.
Re-posting “Fire Last Night”
Some people had trouble reading this yesterday, apologies and let me try again.
From the Ocean Shores Fire Department:
At 11: 38 p.m. on June 2, the Ocean Shores Fire Department and Fire District 7 were dispatched to Park Ave N.E. for a garage fire with smoke visible. The first engine on scene saw a large amount of smoke coming from an unattached garage structure approximately 24X30. Smoke was also coming from the roof line indicating rapid fire growth and active burning. A quick attack was made by first on scene crews by forcing the garage door open and initiating an aggressive fire attack. Ocean Shores Ladder Company 7422 along with Fire District 7 personnel performed ventilation and cut a hole in the roof to release all the heat, smoke and gases. All occupants were out of the nearby house and safe. Ocean Shores Police Department did a great job of scene control and made sure that all occupants of the home were evacuated. Crew’s were on scene for over 2 hours managing the incident. There was a family with small children living in the house. Ocean Shores Fire Department’s Captain Krick stated “This could have been much worse if fire had spread to the house. The quick response time definitely paid off . No one was injured and everyone is safe. That is what is mportant” .The cause of the blaze is still under investigation at this time. Damage is estimated at approximately $10,000.

Sober crowd
Michelle Mosley is the secretary at North Beach Junior/Senior High School, so she sees her only child Nicole at the school every day. Yesterday, she saw Nicole on the hood of a smashed pickup truck. And she saw paramedics working on Nicole. And Nicole going into a hearse. And Nicole in a coffin . . .
It was all part of a “mock” wreck, but, says Michelle, “It was very real.”
The moment tarps were rolled back, to reveal a still, bloodied (fake blood, but looking very real) Nicole sprawled in the wreckage? “That was kind of alike a breath taker,” her mother said. “Even though I knew it wasn’t real, it was still hard to take in.”
Michelle gave a eulogy at a mock — flowers, pall bearers, a program, organ music, the whole deal — funeral, in the gym. Below: the high school kids, who normally when meeting as a group tend to be a bit rambunctious, were still, hushed and respectful. The sobering event definitely had their attention.
OSFD stats
From March 22 to May 1, the Ocean Shores Fire Department responded to 230 calls: 192 medical related, 38 fire related.
