BOYS BASKETBALL

Chitwhins 81, Comets 50

TAHOLAH — Forgoing its patented long-range offense, Taholah utilized its transition game and half-court offense to run away from Naselle to take control of the Coastal 1B League standings on Tuesday night.

Zach Cain led all scorers with 32 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists and three blocked shots. Terrance Jones added 14 points and five rebounds and Tom Anderson 10 points and four rebounds for the Chitwhins (6-0, 11-1), who were 37-for-56 from the field inside the 3-point arc.

“This was the first time I could remember us not hitting a 3-point shot,” Taholah head coach Mike Rose, whose team was 0-for-6 behind the arc, said. “We had 37 field goals off 25 assists, which was great. We had a lot of inside and transition baskets on the break and some rebound putbacks.”

Rose also cited Cain for his all-around game, as well as Anderson and Brett Orozco, who each had five assists, for helping to move the ball around on offense.

On Friday, Taholah hits the road for the first of three straight road games — a trip to North River.

OYEHUT — Kason Koski scored 25 points as Raymond pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat North Beach in a Pacific 2B League game Tuesday at “The House of Pain.”

The Gulls (6-4, 9-5) led 22-9 after one quarter, only to see the Hyaks charge back to take the lead early in the third quarter.

Koski, however, sank a couple of 3-pointers to help Raymond regain the advantage. The Gulls sealed the victory by outscoring North Beach 20-11 in the fourth quarter.

“I thought our kids did a nice job of maintaining their composure,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “We made a nice run in the fourth quarter and were able to put the game away.”

Koski, 8-of-15 from the field, was also cited by Rask for his floor leadership. Teammate Marcus Anderson added 15 points and was also credited for fine defense. Kaci Phansisay had 10 points for Raymond.

Tim Johnson scored 15 points and Tim Poplin and Ryan Turner 10 apiece for North Beach (1-10, 2-13). Turner also dished out four assists, while Marcus Pope grabbed seven rebounds.

North Beach coach Larry Moore cited Pope and Poplin for their play in the paint.

“At times we played really well, but we lost Koski a couple of times and didn’t do a good job on him defensively,” Moore said. “When we needed stops and points, we just couldn’t get them and they did.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Seagulls 53, Hyaks 30

OYEHUT — Raymond’s long-range shooting took the wind out of North Beach’s sails and lifted the Seagulls to victory in a Pacific 2B League game at the House of Pain on Tuesday.

The Gulls (9-1, 12-2) hit seven 3-pointers in the first half to grab a 23-point lead at halftime and roll to victory.

Winter Newman scored 18 points to pace the Gulls, while Cydney Flemetis added 14 and Aubree Gardner scored 13 points.

“We played nice offensively we got shots we are capable of making, we just didn’t make them,” North Beach coach Larry Moore said. “We gave up seven threes in the first half. In the second half, we did a much better job of getting out on their shooters. I was encouraged by how we played in the second half.”

Helen Garman scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Hyaks, while Reilly Moore added nine points and four assists.

Raymond travels to Ilwaco on Friday, while North Beach (7-4, 11-4) hosts Life Christian on Saturday.
