North Beach recycling
Comments from the beach clean-up spun off in the recycling direction, so here’s a post for people to comment, share tips, gripes and (who knows?) maybe even start a movement to up-grade local recycling, and get us some of that curb-side glass recycling that other cities have had since, oh, way back in the last century . . .
Stupid “heat wave” tips
With the weather for “in-landers” heading towards 90 this week, count on the TV weather goofs to give you incredibly-obvious tips, such as:
*Drink plenty of water! Remember: it goes in your mouth, not your ears
*Wear light clothing. Not recommended: burlap, leather, and furs.
*Wear sun screen. Remember: blend it in, or you’ll have “white nose syndrome.”
*Crack the window, for Fido. Or you’ll have “fried Fido.”
*Avoid over-exposure to the heat. Go inside, every once in a while, or better yet . . . head over to the North Beach!
This week’s North Coast News
*Surviving the Fourth: As an invading army storms the beach, heroic defense effort by locals, armed with fire hoses, stretchers, citation books, garbage bags.
*Wine & Culture: Leslie Reedy brews up a big festival of wine, food and art, to benefit the Interpretive Center
*The Girls of Summer: Young softball team looks to the World Series
*Locals Only: The $240,000 “leak”
*Gary Iversen baby seal photo
. . . and a little of this and a little of that . . .
Summer called
“Hey, guys, I’m here on the North Beach, showed up right on schedule, afternoon of July 5. So where is everyone?” From weather.com:
Young and old pitching in
Ernie Johnson, SuperVolunteer, is over at the Chance approach, leading a team of volunteers picking up mounds of trash. Ken Lanfear, the Director of Public Works, is coordinating his crew as they load up and haul away two dump truck loads full of garbage.
Old-timer Arnold Samuels took time out from picking up “dirty diapers, all kinds of trash” to take this photo of Rebekah Midbrod, a young local helping clean up after the army of invaders:
A few dunes fires
With mobile units stationed at the beach, OSFD quickly extinguished a half-dozen dunes fires last night.
How was the 4th where you were?
Damp it!
This misty weather might not be ideal for picnics; on the other hand, it should dampen the dunes. Last night behind “hotel row,” there was at least one dunes fire (quickly extinguished by the OSFD, which has “battle stations” set up).
“Why all the rack-et?”
While a lot of folks are getting wild this weekend, every day is Independence Day, for the true wild ones of Ocean Shores . . .
“Save the Library”
The newly formed “Save the Library” group will meet Thursdays at 1 pm at the Library meeting room.
Bear-foot Bandit?
The bear that was shot at apparently remains “at large” (and we mean very large, estimated 250 pounder). Meanwhile from the comments section: If the bear swam west across the lake that would explain why our Earth Machine compost bin was uprooted during the night
now what about my missing boots? I have lost 2 of them off the decks this spring / summer and unfortunately both of what disappeared were right ones and I really don’t have 2 left feet
