Police and the city of Ocean Shores have received several reports about a series of incidents of vandalism within the Weatherwax Nature Preserve, located along Duck Lake with the main trailhead off of Overlake Avenue.
Mayor Crystal Dingler noted the city experienced similar vandalism last summer. This time, two of the donated and restored benches have disappeared. “There have been all sorts of dirty tricks,” she said. “It’s a problem.” The most recent report of vandalism was Jan. 25. Year-end Police/Fire statistics
The Ocean Shores Police Department experienced a 9.3 percent increase in total incidents in 2016, with the number of assaults more than doubling from 49 in 2015 to 110 in 2016.
With full statistics for the year complete and posted on the city’s website, Police responded to 8,873 total incidents in 2016, compared to 8,118 in 2015, which also saw a 2.4 percent increase over 2014.
While there were no homicides or robberies, there were two rapes, 74 burglaries, 217 theft cases and 8 stolen vehicle cases of the total 411 Class A crime reports — an increase over the 344 Class A crimes reported in 2015.
Of the traffic-related workload, traffic stops (1,164) dropped by 8.8 percent last year, but citations issued (468) increased 6.8 percent. There were 36 traffic accidents in 2016, compared to 44 in 2015, and total arrests dropped from 163 in 2015 to 148 in 2016.
The Fire Department experienced a 17 percent increase over 2015 in responding to 394 fire incidents, and an 82 percent increase in responding to 1,853 EMS incidents last year. Total transport numbers were up 18.95 percent. Statistics are available online at: http://www.osgov.com/
