NCN911: Truck lost in surf, Friday highway accidents

State Patrol reports, Ocean Shores Police log

The Ocean Shores Fire Department was called out for a surf rescue off the Marine View Drive beach approach trail on Sunday evening after a truck with two people inside was reportedly stuck in the incoming ocean surf.

The first calls about 7:15 p.m. on Sunday provided differing reports: One was that there was an unoccupied vehicle at the water line and another that there was a truck with two victims inside in the surf.

Medic 71 and Brush 71 units responded and firefighters found an unoccupied vehicle that was stuck in the sand near the water line with no victims in the ocean anywhere in the vicinity, a Fire Department news release said.

Ocean Shores Police also arrived on the scene and noted that there were people farther south who appeared to be waving their arms.

“The Brush 71 rig was able to navigate the thick, deep sand and found that there were two wet and sandy men laying in the sand with some good Samaritan bystanders helping them,” said Fire Dept. Lt. Corey Kuhl. “They were quickly identified as the two subjects that were reported to be in the truck in the surf. They had self-rescued and were fortunate to be able to escape the full size Ford F-350 truck before it became fully submerged.”

The two men escaped with no injuries but the same could not be said for the truck, which was almost completely submerged within an hour of the original call.

Friday highway accidents

A 65-year-old Hoquiam man and his 50-year-old female passenger, also from Hoquiam, were seriously injured and flown to Harborview Hospital in Seattle Friday afternoon (Aug. 4) when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into the brush on U.S. Highway 101, nine miles north of Hoquiam.

The State Patrol said the black 1997 Honda GL motorcycle hit an oil slick in the road and skidded off the roadway about 1:45 p.m. at milepost 96. Both the man and his passenger were ejected, and the accident caused the busy highway to be blocked for 3 hours, 42 minutes.

Both victims were wearing helmets, and were initially take to Grays Harbor Community Hospital before being airlifted to Harborview. No information was available about their conditions.

The State Patrol also responded to a single vehicle accident at 2:47 p.m. Friday about a mile west of Hoquiam on State Route 109. In that accident, a 36-year-old Gig Harbor man was transported to Community Hospital after he apparently suffered a medical event and crashed his minivan 30 feet off the roadway in the brush just north of Harborview Ct.

The man was traveling southbound, crossed the center line and northbound lane before the van left the road.
