Hyaks headed to world competition in Nevada; Labor Day weekend benefits

Support Hyak powerlifters

The North Beach Powerlifting team will host a car wash fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Sunday and Monday at Bank of the Pacific on Chance a la Mer. Proceeds will be used to take 10 Hyak Powerlifters to compete in the World Championships in Laughlin, NV, Sept. 28-29. Also, the North Beach Eagles are conducting a raffle of an Anthony Robinson wood carving to help the Powerlifters. Tickets are available at the Eagles Aerie, 676 Ocean Shores Blvd. NW.

Labor Day yard sale

The Coastal Interpretive Center will join with the North Beach VFW Post 8956 for a Labor Day weekend yard sale, Aug. 31-Sept. 4 at the VFW Post building, located at 953 Trent Ct. NE. To donate items, call (360) 289-3810.

Saturday Fun

The Coastal Interpretive Center on Sept. 1 will be hosting another free crafts program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will be a Sasquatch event for ages 4-12.

Stage West auditions

Stage West Community Theatre is gearing up for its ninth season with the hilarious holiday play, “A Doublewide Texas Christmas,” by Jones, Hope, and Wooten. Auditions will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lions Club at 832 Ocean Shores Blvd NW in Ocean Shores. The cast includes six female roles: one in her late teens to early twenties, the rest range from 40s to 70s. There are three male parts: two in their 40s, the other older. Rehearsals begin Oct. 1 and the show is from Nov. 24 through Dec. 9 or 16. More information at www.stagewestcommunitytheatre.org.

Events on Emerson

Citizens for a Clean Harbor on Sept. 12 will be presenting the movie, This Living Salish Sea, which looks below the surface of the ocean to the front lines of the fight against the Trans-Mountain Pipeline in Burnaby, BC. Artist and filmmaker Sarama uses his lens and his writing, the voices of the people shown, and the power of nature’s beauty to tell the story, voiced by narrator Colleen Elson and featuring the music of Dene drummers, John Ten Bear Thompson, Shie Rozow, and Tim McMorris. Doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments and discussion, movie at dusk. Located at 4th and Emerson in Hoquiam.

Register to vote

A GOTV (Get Out The Vote) group will be registering voters with a table set up at the Ocean Shores Convention Center for the AAOS Arts and Crafts Festival over Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 2). A table to register voters also will be set up at the Ocean Shores Library on Sept. 8 and Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Musical opportunities

Harbor residents looking to dust off their high school instruments or sing outside the shower are welcome to join one of several community musical groups hosted by Grays Harbor College.

The fall season begins in mid-September for the Grays Harbor Civic Choir, Grays Harbor Symphony Orchestra and Grays Harbor Concert Band. No tryouts are required for these three community groups; they are open to anyone who wishes to participate.
