Dozens of enquiring young minds participated in a variety of activities as part of “STEM Week” at Ocean Shores Elementary School Feb. 12-16. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students experienced various in-class activities, plus learning opportunities such as “bottle rockets,” “egg drop” and STEM Family Night, which is similar to a school science fair.

Teacher Michael Barbero “pulls the pin” that launches second grader Bell Porter’s bottle rocket, powered by compressed air and water, as teacher Francelle Jordan and students watch.

“Solid Into Gas” was fifth grader Elton Rockey’s STEM project.

Sixth grade student Paige Trudeau demonstrates her “Sugar Rainbow” project.

Kyla Eden, second grade, shows off her “Dancing Raisins.”

Friday afternoon, the Ocean Shores Fire Department set up their big aerial ladder truck for the “egg drop.” Students were challenged to create protective packaging or soft-landing devices that would allow individual eggs to survive being dropped from the top of the ladder.
