On the Beach: Savoring the flavors of fall

On the Beach Column by Daniela Werner

Although we had some measurable rain and wind on Sunday, summer seems to want to linger at the beach just a bit longer. The evenings are getting a bit cooler and morning fog is welcoming us to the change of seasons. This change may mean a change in your dining palate as well. One of the great things about fall dining is comfort food. You know, slow-cooked dinners, with heaping servings of mashed potatoes and gravy. Our tastes turn from light dishes and refreshing salads to the likes of meatloaf and roasts simmering in the oven. Let’s explore some great places right here on the beach to find those warm comforting dishes.

One popular breakfast go-to is biscuits and gravy. Ocean Shores has a few great choices for this delicious way to start the day with a hearty breakfast. Our Place is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. Generous portions cooked to order. Friendly service and a menu with something for everyone. Their biscuits and gravy breakfast choices are first rate. But get there early. And be prepared to wait. It will be worth your while. Located at 676 Ocean Shores Blvd. NW. They are open from 7 a.m.-2 pm.

For lunch when you’re on the beach you can’t go wrong with clam chowder. So many choices that we even host a festival and cook-off to celebrate all things clam. Bennett’s Fish Shack has a clam chowder that is always consistent and fresh. Now that the restaurant is less crowded than summer, stop by for a visit. And Galway Bay Irish Pub has an amazing variety of warm savory dishes for cool days. One dish to try is the Beef in Guinness. Make plans to stop in on Sunday night for a traditional pot roast dinner, only $11.

Want to Celebrate the end of Summer with a sampling of seasonal favorites? Oyhut Bay Bistro is offering a seasonal dinner and wine pairing Saturday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. Dinner will include a mushroom polenta and salmon with blackberry chipotle sauce. Call (360) 940-7138 for reservations.

Fall in the Northwest also makes us think of a Western Washington favorite: the Puyallup Fair. You can visit the fair hassle-free on Saturday, Sept. 21 with Ride the Wave Tours. They will be taking passengers for a fun-filled day at the fair. Call (206) 313-8899 for more information and tickets.

Don’t forget about Homecoming! The Parade will be on Thursday Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. This is a small parade to celebrate our high school students, sports and groups. Consider showing your support of local kids by having your business or group enter the parade. Call Lisa Sims for information at (360) 580-8227. Cheer them on the street along Point Brown Avenue and then attend the Homecoming football game on Friday.

We’re looking forward to a Festive Fall “On the Beach.”
