On the Beach: Good time to get outside

On the Beach column by Daniela Werner

January has been a stormy month. It’s hard to stay focused this time of year with the bare and gray landscape of winter. We may feel stuck inside due to the weather, deep in that mid-winter rut. Well don’t sequester yourself inside, glued to the TV. A little gray is the best reason to get out and remember why we chose the North Beach to live, work and play. Drive down to the jetty at lunch and peek over the rocks. Mother Nature is the only channel you need to watch.

Have you ever seen the swans over on Perkins Pond? Go watch the swans. They are full of joy. They didn’t vote. They just glide over the water carefree. Why not leave for work a little early to take the time to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and a croissant.

We have so many great choices in Ocean Shores to start your day slowly and in good company. Or maybe end your day with a bit of cheer.

The next time you stop in the Ocean Shores IGA for a few dinner items, why not grab a bouquet of flowers for the counter or dinner table. Bring a little color home as focal point and just leave the darn TV off.

We do have the Superbowl coming up the first weekend of February. And although our beloved Seahawks aren’t playing, you must at least watch for the commercials and the halftime show! Get together with family and friends and laugh a little. We need more laughter.

Want to get out for an evening with friends? There are some great things coming up.

Bundle up and drive out to Ocean City the weekend of Feb. 10-12 for the Burning Bears Festival. Never experienced this yet? Wooden Bears are created from teams of woodcarvers from all over the world. The public is welcome to come watch the carvings happen live on Friday and Saturday mornings. These pieces are auctioned on Saturday evening. A bonfire begins at 5 p.m, sending sparks into the night sky.

Valentine’s Day is just right around the corner, so here are a few hints you can mention in the upcoming weeks.

Want a special date to a premiere? On Friday Feb. 10 at the Ocean Shores Convention Center, you can enjoy live music, wine and appetizers. Get the first chance to view the antiques and collectibles of the Renewed Antique Show before the event opens to the public on Saturday the 11th. Tickets are $20 presale and $25 at the door and include a weekend pass. Presale tickets available at the Dusty Trunk and the Visitor Information Center.

Another fun idea for a date night is a trip up to Seabrook for a fun, interactive event where you can drink wine, eat delicious appetizers, and create a one of a kind masterpiece to hang on your wall! The Couples Create – Corks &Canvas painting event will be at the Town Hall Saturday Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. for couples 21 and over. It takes around 2.5 hours. $140 per couple includes painting for two, appetizers and wine/beer.

Looking for an active family day? Capital Volksport Sea Breeze Walking Festival is Feb. 18-20. The Event includes 25k and 30k bike rides around Ocean Shores in addition to three walks around Ocean Shores, Roosevelt Beach and Moclips. Saturday Night Social at the Convention Center features an Italian buffet and BYOB. Details at www.capitolvolkssportclub.org Reservations for dinner required by Feb. 1.

So, there you are. No excuse to stay inside and watch the news. Get out there like the swans on the pond and glide.
