Monday is a “furlough day” in O.S.
From Ordinance 876, which amended the City of Ocean Shores hours, and set furlough days:
2.20.040 Temporary Closures in 2010 All offices of the City normally open for the transaction of business with the public shall be closed on the following weekdays during the calendar year 2010 except for waterworks utilities and shared utility: January 4, February 1, March 1, March 15, April 5, April 19, May 3, May 17, September 20, October 4, October 18, November 1, November 15, November 29, December 6, December 20 and December 27.
A soggy January, but . . .
We’re already about one-third higher than the average January rainfall, with three more days of rain predicted. On the flip side, says the National Weather Service:...ABOVE NORMAL JANUARY TEMPERATURES COULD LEAD TO WARMEST ON RECORD FOR MOST OF WESTERN WASHINGTON... WESTERN WASHINGTON HAS EXPERIENCED WARM TEMPERATURES THOUGH MOST OF JANUARY 2010. THIS MONTH COULD RISE IN THE RECORD BOOKS TO BE THE WARMEST JANUARY ON RECORD FOR MANY LOCATIONS. THE WARMER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE LARGELY ATTRIBUTED TO EL NINO. LISTED ARE THE TOP 5 WARMEST JANUARIES ON RECORD WITH THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURES FOR JANUARY 2010 AS OF THE 27TH.

The wrath of Lillian
The normally even-keeled Lillian Broadbent was livid, at this morning’s Readers Input Group (“RIG the Paper“) meeting. She laid into yours truly: “How could you give half the paper to McEachin?” An exaggeration, she admitted, but still . . . Here’s why: When I emailed questions on 2007 to Rich McEachin, the former city manager/police chief, I pledged that his answers would appear in the paper, word-for-word. Well, his answers were detailed and extensive; normally, I would have used maybe a third of it, and trimmed out the rest. But I had made that promise . . .

The dig is on
North Beaches cleared for razor clam digging Friday through Sunday; Long Beach remains closed, says Fish & Wildlife:
OLYMPIA – Twin Harbors beach will open for razor clam digging tomorrow (Jan. 28), followed by openings at three other beaches later this week after a new round of marine toxin tests showed the clams there are safe to eat.
Long Beach, however, will remain closed to digging due to high levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) detected in the clams.
“We’re pleased that we can move forward with digs at these four beaches,” said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. “The latest tests showed that the clams there remain safe to eat.”
The four beaches will open for digging at noon on the following days:
· Twin Harbors – Thursday (Jan. 28) through Sunday (Jan. 31)
· Copalis and Mocrocks – Friday (Jan. 29) through Sunday (Jan. 31)
· Kalaloch Beach – Saturday (Jan. 30) through Sunday (Jan. 31)

OSPD
From the Jan. 11, 2010 meeting minutes, Mayor’s Report: “Council approved the 2010 budget with 9.5% of salaries removed for public safety personnel; a 10.39% reduction will be placed for clerical and public works personnel with the ordinance implementing furloughs and non-paid holidays.
“Mediation will continue on January 22 based on the bargaining units’ rejection of concessions. Because concessions were not received, a police officer was laid off. Sergeant Paul Luck submitted a retirement letter hoping to save the layoff position but his accrued benefit cost is $88,000.00. If funding cannot be found to pa the accrued benefit cost, another layoff may occur or that position will not be filled until the $88,000.00 is paid.“
