Storm on the way
From Grays Harbor County Emergency Management:
Stormy Weekend Approaching
Grays Harbor County still has very severe icing conditions in East County. Although all main roads appear wet, there is still a chance of isolated icy spots and black ice. Driving will remain hazardous on all secondary roads and possibly on main roads from Montesano to East County. All neighboring Counties are experiencing severe icing conditions as well as numerous downed trees and power outages.
Today – A steady rain will begin to fall throughout the County. A strong front will impact us County-wide in the early evening and could bring sustained winds between 20-25 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Since the ground is already saturated and with the increased water from the rain and melting snow, there is a large potential for more downed trees and power lines in all areas of the County. Be prepared for potential power outages.
Friday night and Saturday morning – In the early morning hours on Saturday, between 2 & 5am, a very strong front will bring rain and very strong wind gusts of 45-50mph which may be felt in all areas of the County. Rain totals will be between 2-3” throughout the County. Since the ground is already saturated and with the increased water from the rain and melting snow, there is a large potential for more downed trees and power lines in all areas of the County. Be prepared for potential power outages.
DO NOT venture near downed trees, broken tree limbs or power lines!
There are four weather fronts approaching the County between tonight into Tuesday. All will bring warmer temperatures, rain and windy conditions.
FLOODING IMPACTS:
At this time, ALL rivers and streams will continue to rise from each weather event. The Chehalis River is projected to reach flood stage of 21 feet @ 10am on Sunday morning and crest on Sunday morning @ 21.75 feet. At this time no other rivers are expected to flood. Please be aware of small stream flooding and ponding of water on streets.
LANDSLIDE POSSIBILITIES:
All soils are saturated. There will be rain for the next few days which could increase the possibility of landslide hazards on elevated grounds , bluffs and overhangs. Please be extremely alert for ground shifting.
SNOW LOAD ISSUES:
Grays Harbor County Emergency Management is alerting all citizens that the snow we received was extremely wet and heavy. There have been numerous reports of collapsed structures. The additional weight from the ice today is adding to the problem. Please be aware of possible collapse to awnings and structures not in sound condition. Be extremely cautious if you attempt to clear the snow from a roof area or awning. Your weight may be what will trigger a collapse. Please consult with a professional before clearing any snow from your roof.
Also, make sure to clear any drains and downspouts around your home so the water can drain freely. You may need to do this numerous times over the next few days.
