Yesterday’s fire in O.S.
There was a small fire (more smoke than flames) in one apartment of a six-unit building near the Interpretive Center, yesterday. The OSFD quickly took care of business, supported by neighboring volunteer firefighters. Minor damage, no injuries reported. Release, from the OSFD:
The Ocean Shores Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1030 Mt Olympus Ave Se. On May 31st at 11:53 a.m. The occupant was home at the time of the fire and said that they were in the process of moving and there was no power to the unit. The occupants had set some items on the stove top. The main power was turned back on to the unit, causing the stove top to catch several items on fire. The occupant and a friend tried to extinguish the fire but it grew too rapidly. Both occupants evacuated the unit and called 911.
Firefighters first on scene found a single story apartment building. Only one unit had smoke showing out the front door. Firefighters entered the structure and found a fire in the kitchen area and smoke throughout the unit. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and checked for fire extension. There was extensive smoke damage throughout the unit and one cat was found deceased. Both occupants were treated on scene for smoke inhalation. Fire crews from Fire District 7 and Ocean Shores Police were on scene and assisted the Ocean Shores Fire Department.

Well, like I said, Just curious… And I also said “Not taking anything away from our firefighters”…. I don’t need to do alot of research on this…It seems that we are fortunate to have such a good community mutual aid aggreement. Fancy fire station, fancy firetrucks, 13.5 firefighters but only 3-4 on duty at anytime, staff impaired by all the ambulance runs to Aberdeen, seems to add up to O Shores paying all this money in levys/taxs and still NOT adequately covered for real emergencys/fire supression. Hmmmm…
District 7 will respond to structure fires in Ocean Shores because fighting fires big and small is dangerous and labor intensive. No matter the size of fire large or small. Small fires get big quick. Fire grows 1 1/2 X it’s size every minute. Quick aggressive fire attack is what you need to prevent a larger incident. Ocean Shores is only staffed with 3-4 full time firefighters and hopefully 2 of those firefighters are not on a medical call transporting to Aberdeen when a fire breaks out. If you think that a 1-4 firefighters will put out a regular house fire you need to do more research. Try looking up NFPA 1710 on line. This will give you a better definition of what it takes to do that of a FIREFIGHTER. NFPA 1710 is a 30 year scientific study that is fact.”Look it up” seriously
Not to take anything away from the fire fighters, but just curious – Why would a district 7 unit come all the way into O. Shores to respond to what is discribed as such a small fire? Two additional engines reponded from our fire station. Is this just a case of community mutual aid and support for an unknown structure fire or could we not handle our own fire response, with our own equipment/crews? This is the second time that I know of this type of response. Hitting a fly with a sledge hammer?? Whi is watching out for District 7 while they are in O Shores fighting our “small kitchen fires”?
God Bless District 7 Firefighters and Ocean Shores Department. Keep them safe.
