The Community Club thread has been 86′ed
A certain someone whose email was published (starting an informative/entertaining debate on the Community Club issue) was deeply offended that his “private” email was posted. (He fired off a hilariously scathing email, calling me, among other things “a washed-up music critic.”) After further review, I’ve nuked that posting, and the entire 7o-plus comments.
So the blackboard has been erased, and we begin at the beginning.
What say ye, Local? Love the Ocean Shores Community Club, as a low-cost athletic/social facility? Or loathe it, as a dictatorial entity that can take your house, if you don’t pay your dues?

Are there any outside fire pits down by the water behind the club. It would be a great place to have a small camp fire and cook hotdogs while the sun sets. You guys really make living in Shores a pleasure.
@Humble servant
Glad you’re looking forward to a great time at our expense. I have the greatest respect for those who dip their bread in my plate and believe they are entitled to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I believe Aesop summed it up nicely in the fable “The Grasshopper and the Ants.” Have a great time basking in our glow. I’ll be toiling while you fiddle.
I am looking forward to getting back to shores and enjoy a round of pickle ball then half hour in the pool doing laps finished with 30 minutes in the hot tub, off to the pier for a bit of pier fishing then take a long walk in our beautiful parks provided by the CC. No where else you can do that anytime you want for less than $200 a year. My hats off to the board and all they have to put up with.
SEE YOU AT THE CLUB
Don’tcha just love the internet? You can inform yourself about anything! Thanks for the link CAC!

Personally I do not like the fact that it is mandatory… but since it is, I would like some updated work out equipment. Like new elliptical would be a good start.
Instead of improving on what they currently have they put in a Pickle Ball Court. What the heck is that?! They might have well said they were putting in a Basque pelota court.
I think the club is great. The new hot tub is very nice. I pay 5 memberships to the club and my annual cost is still less than 2 months at the Alaska club in Anchorage. Pool is always clean and I never see it full. Keep up the good work.
Color me sad
, it was a great thread with lots of interesting opinions and information and most of it will never be repeated in quite the same way again.
Are there bigger problems out there, everywhere? Yep, of course, but the conversation about the CC was just fun, that’s all.
By the way, is anyone else puzzled by someone who would think that sending an e mail to a newspaper editor was ‘private’?
Tom, that’s just too funny, and not at all surprising. Same old, same old Ocean Shores.
People writing here need to get their facts straight. This is a PRIVATE CLUB. It is NOT the CITY. If you don’t pay your taxes, the government can take your house. If you don’t pay the club, and have a mortgage, the bank will foreclose on you and pay the club. Your bank probably required you to get the club to put them second in line to their interest in your property. As to second lots, the second lots could be campground lots for friends and family. If not, they are investments and you write off the community club fees as business expenses. The fact that there are resident and non-resident board members actually does more for the people owning lots here than the city does. At least they get some representation. The intent was not to have the whole North Beach use the club. It is not the Y, yet another private club. If you rent, you CAN pay for membership. So, if that is your desire, belly up to the bar and pay your tab. No faciliy is ever built expecting everyone to use it. It is not just a gym. If one notices, it has docks, boat launches, pools and and large fields where sports are played by kids from all over the area. No one is checking IDs except at the club house and pools. All the other facilities are open to the public. In fact, everyone can go to the cafe there to catch a snack. At least it is better run than the Marina and most of the City.
Considering Ocean Shores “real” problems, this subject isn’t worth the ink. Unless you like smoke screens.
Oh Tom..Nothing gets my blood boiling like this topic. Fortunately my house is grand-fathered in, so I don’t have to pay those idiotic dues. I think it’s absolutely stupid that you HAVE to pay for a membership for a work out place, even if you don’t use it! Even more stupid is the fact that a work out facility can repo your house! Go ask the YMCA if they repo your house if you don’t pay your membership and they will tell you no. What right do they have to take your house away if you don’t pay it? Yes, the price of the membership is a fraction of what you would pay at the Y, for a family of 5 it’s over 500 a year. And what about those poor people that have more than one lot? They have to pay for EACH lot! Now why would the city think that it’s alright to rip people off and make them pay for ALL lots? Even a church pastor has to pay for their house lot and the lot that the church sits on, talked about messed up! I think for those people that have more than one lot in their name, they should only have to pay one price, the same price that a person with one lot has to pay. This city likes to rip people off. So to answer your question Tom, I hate the fact that the city can take your house away if you don’t pay for a workout membership. Say that out loud, and hear how retarded that sounds? “If I don’t pay a workout membership my house gets taken away.” UGH!
Sorry this is lengthy, I tried to keep it down to a minimum.
Sorry, but anytime you threaten me with seizure of MY property, it’s no bargain. This is pure nanny-state rule. You have no choice, we control the vertical and horizontal, YOU control NOTHING! It’s Socialism in it’s worst form. It’s only a bargain for those that use the facility; subsidized by those of us who will never use it, nor want to (and PLEASE, don’t tell me that is my problem). If you notice the upcoming election of board members, two of the three are non-residents and you are not allowed write-ins. Ask yourself, who’s in control and who is controlled?
The CC is essentially a Ponzi scheme. Somewhere in the vicinity of 8000 lots out of 13,000 have $145 extorted from them. That is $1,160,000 a year. Where does all that money go? It certainly does not provide a facility for 8000 people. The CC gets away with extorting the many for the very small fraction of those that do such things as play cards weekly. Most other activities cost even more money. If all 8000 used the facilities the place would be far more expensive, crowded and a dump from overuse. Benefiting the few at the expense of the many is very distasteful in our culture and more suited for dictatorships.
thats all im sayin, let it be a pay as you go system that way more of north beach residents can use it and those that dont arent stuck paying for something they wont ever use.
im sure there are more people out there who would love to pay for it to use it than there are those being forced to pay for it and dont use it at all.
Oops, missed a digit….the monthly breakdown should be about
12.08. Still though, quite a bargain.
Well, even though I don’t like it being mandatory that you join
the community club when you buy a house and that a private entity
is allowed to put a lien on your house should you fail to pay,
no one twisted my arm to sign on the dotted line when I bought
my property. They just put in a new hot tub a couple of months
ago, and do keep the facility in very good condition.
I’m sure the electric bill to keep the facility running is no small
chunk of change either.
Out of curiosity, if one does not pay their dues and your property
is foreclosed upon, then does not the community club then have to
pay the taxes and mortgage payments on the property until they can
sell it?
Makes me wonder what would happen if everyone stopped paying
their yearly dues. Would the community club suddenly be
saddled with a lot of properties that it then can’t pay for?
Granted, being forced to pay under threat of foreclosure is in
my humble opinion, a form of racketeering, as I said, no one
forced me to sign on the dotted line when I bought my property.
What a lot of people don’t realize is the freedom they have
here. There are a lot of communities with homeowner associations
that have draconian bylaws that give them the authority to pull
money out of your wallet if your house doesn’t look the same as
your neighbors. In other words, your house must look almost
exactly the same as your neighbors to keep that sense of community.
And people willingly read these contracts, sign on the dotted
line and give these homeowner associations the power to watch
you like a hawk ready to slap you with a fine at the slightest
infraction. If you break down your membership fee to the
community club, a $145.00 fee comes out to about $12.84 a
month. Now, where can you go and swim, soak in a hot tub,
sit in a sauna, use the offered wifi or play a game of
basketball in the gym with no time restrictions?
The place is open seven days a week too. In this day and age,
it’s quite a bargain. It costs more to get 2 meals at
McDonalds. Since I use the facility, I have no problem paying
for it, but I’d like to see the mandatory fee go away and
see the club go to a per use system. That way, people who use
the club can pay, and people that don’t, pay nothing.
Anyway, that’s my opinion.
