Bad water
A caller yesterday left a voicemail saying her water was “putrid,” and that she had not been able to reach anyone at the City. Miles Beach, the water superintendent, said at last night’s council meeting that he has been spending a great deal of time fielding complaints, and that the bad water is because the city is using stored water, as it transitions from the previous system to the new $7 million MIEX system, which Beach said is now complete. He said the sub-par water will be in the system for at least another week. *I just emailed Beach to ask to clarify his comments, and determine if the current water has any health concerns, and why exactly is smells and tastes bad (even by Ocean Shores standards).

Glad it’s not just me, I was starting to wonder. It’s quite disgusting! Especially when it’s hot water…showers are no fun lately.
It is my understanding that the MIEX system is a Positive Ion exchange system which is different from a water softener which is a negative ion exchange. The NACl will Therefore they are using the NA to bond to the organics in the water. That means that new system will purge those out while putting more Cl in the water as a free ratical. That will help improve the saturation and reduce the need for the city to add so much chlorine. I only hope that some other issue does not develop that throws a wrench in the chemistry of the new system.
Since the berm is not designed for negative ions, it will not use the NACl to clear out the Calcium (Ca). The Ca in your system would need some thing to cause it to release from the “metals” in your system before it would bond with the Cl in the water or anything else with a negative valence.
Actually, @ CAC, it is true that the piging of the lines, system purging/cleaning of storage tanks, and added Cl will in time help to clear up the water, but the good news is: Because of the type of system the MIEX is, the water itself will, over a period of time, clean the pipes from the meter to the tap, as well as throughout ones whole house. However, also over time, the calcium deposit buildup in fixtures/pipes/water heaters, etc, will desolve away and some folks may experience leaks. Overall, the taste/clarity WILL IMPROVE OVER TIME…Hurray!!!
Until they pig the lines, clean the systems and raise the Cl levels we will have poor water. Nothing takes care of the last 100 feet – from the meter to your tap!
Oh, and let’s see a copy of the last water quality report sent to the state.
Why don’t you ask Mr Beach why the “stored water” is bad. Isn’t it a part of the over all system? And how is a new $8 million system is going to deal with that.
