I am sad to see that age was brought up as a negative. Though I certainly don’t consider myself less rational with age, some other folks might be living the same year over and over again and believe people decline with maturity.
Also, I believe our city people are already professional leaders. There is probably not one single new acronym that they haven’t heard of. The principles of leadership do not change, though it might seem so by reading a best-seller list. And how could people get into these positions without skills in decision-making? You greatly under-estimate today’s office if you believe that it is training that it lacks. In fact, in this city you are being led by some of the best-trained management on the coast.
I think all of our city and elected leadership is very well trained indeed and I don’t think any amount of additional leadership training will fix what’s wrong with our city and government. What can one government agency say to another that will solve our problems?
Government agencies are likely to teach each other nothing more than the illusions of their own perpetual motion machines and we will simply have more of the same in a different package.
Not to mention the cost! Would a 1% property tax increase each year cover it? Continuing education requirements are a huge drain of money and time. I have been to many seminars designed to fulfill CE requirements. In the end, the cost of CE credits, in both time and money, has driven me out of a profession, which I had practiced for the most part pro bono.
No, we do not need this. We simply need our leaders to apply their knowledge and collect the data necessary to show their work when they solve our problems.
YES!!! Put some of our tax dollars to good use. Training should absolutely be a mandatory requirement for all personnel in decision making positions. If someone is too rigid or stubborn to learn new things, then they should retire immediately – on their dime not ours!
when you live in a town full of “old farts”, “old farts” end up running the place. and the local “young bloods” are like that can the mayor is kicking. going down the road.
I think what we really need is some “young blood” in the mayor’s seat. Someone who REALIZES the higher taxes to pay for the spending addictions are going to affect future OS generations. The current mayor is just kicking the can down the road since he knows he won’t be around to pay the tab.
i’m sure a little leadership and management training would not hurt. it appears that our current “leadership” has no management training what so ever. our military requires it BEFORE assuming a role of leadership. for those of us that are followers/sheep, the edge of the cliff is dangerously close. when do we put on the old binders, take off the blinders, abd call a screeching halt to the whole damn thing?
How much would it cost us in overtime to attend this training. If it was OTJ training while performing their tasks, then great. Most will say they already know this stuff. Will they pay attention? Yes, have the new contracts require CE in order to retain their jobs. Have it at their cost. If you are an accountant, nurse, doctor, and many other professions, you have to do CE.
Well of course we do!! But first problem would be to convince our city leaders/mayor/clerk/dept heads that they could benefit from taking these courses and that would be a big sell to several of them who already believe they know it all. and second would be the $cost$ which I did not see in the inital over view but is probably on their website. Until we get that part where employee’s/leadership are required to do their own continuing education for retention of their employment, then good stuff like this will most likely not be taken advantage of.
