Big win for Hyaks
North Beach High made a long, long road trip to Seattle yesterday, and the football team’s defense came up big, leading the Hyaks to a thrilling win, evening the season’s record at 1-1. Daily World coverage:
SEATTLE — Dominic Deibel returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and an inspired North Beach defense withstood a late Seattle Lutheran threat for a 7-6 victory in a non-league football game Saturday night at West Seattle Stadium.
Seattle Lutheran reached the Hyak 3-yard line in the final minute. But Joey Dalesandro made a game-saving tackle on third down and a fourth-down Saint pass fell incomplete.
Deibel took the opening kickoff 85 yards to the house. Derek Archer tacked on what proved to be the decisive conversion.
Seattle Lutheran scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter. The Saints ran the swinging gate from kick formation on the conversion, but Deibel tackled the ball-carrier for a loss.
North Beach’s defense made the slim margin stand up despite several Saint threats.
“Our defense put out the fire when they got to the goal line three times,” North Beach coach Robin Andrea said.
The Hyaks overcame a couple of injuries, with safety Carson Ketter and inside linebacker Joseph Kerr stepping in to fill holes.
“That being said, you could name our whole starting defense,” Andrea said. “They were fantastic the entire game.”
The Hyaks (1-1) enter Pacific League play Friday at Willapa Valley.
