Monday night’s City Council meeting
At Monday night’s City Council meeting, Ocean Shores Mayor Garland French announced an agreement “for Hoquiam to provide financial management (for Ocean Shores) through the end of this year.” He said it will “reduce costs and improve efficiency.” Hoquiam Finance Director Mike Folkers previously served as the Finance Director for Ocean Shores.
Art Wuerth, the most recent Ocean Shores finance director, resigned last week.
Citizen comments:
Edson Engle thanked the council and mayor “for thinking outside the box.
“It is time to start thinking about wages. The mayor’s wages, everyone’s wages.”
Holly Plackett, co-director of the Ocean Shores Chamber of Commerce, announced a Candidates forum/debate, Friday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at Aberdeen High School, 7 p.m.
Ricki Midbrod was appointed to the Library board, and Melissa and Bruce Leven were appointed to the Parks board.
Marlene Penry stated that, if the Library measure fails, “I don’t want council to think people don’t want a library . . . Most people want a library, it’s just where the money is going to come from.”
“Can we have chickens in Ocean Shores?”
Five locals asked council to allow chickens in the city.
Councilman John Lynn announced he will meet for “coffee and conversation” with anyone who would like to talk local politics Thursday mornings at the Shilo, from 9 to 10 a.m.
Peggy Berry said she will be taking a medical leave for two months.
The meeting was followed by an Executive Session (not open to the public), “To discuss with legal counsel litigation and potential litigation under RCW 42.30.110 (1)(i) and pursuant to RCW 42.30.140 (b)(4) regarding discussion of strategy and position on collective bargaining grievance and mediation.”

July 28, 2003 Council Minutes:
Rich McEachin reported that the Finance Department was awarded, for the third year, the Washington Finance Officers Association Distinguished Award for Budget Presentation. It is the highest form of recognition for governmental budgeting. Mr. McEachin commended Mike Folkers and his team for an excellent job.

It was brought up at the meeting, that when he was the finance director in the past, Ocean Shores actually got awards for their budget. I wasn’t here then so I don’t know how that went, but it seemed positive to me.
The ONLY thing that bothers me is that Mr. Folkers was a
PREVIOUS financial director for OS. It seems to me that much of ‘previous’ has not been so good.
Thank you Lorraine
Congratulations Ricki!
