More on the burn ban
From the OSFD:
As of July 15, 2010 The County Fire Marshals Office has put a restriction on all land clearing, residential and silviculturalĀ (forest practices) burning. Burning is prohibited.
In Ocean Shores you can still have a cooking fire/small campfire:
3 feet in diameter surrounded by non combustible materials.
A shovel must be near by
A water supply must be near by
A ring of metal, stone, or brick at least 8 inches above the ground around the fire pit.
A 2 foot area around the pit must be cleared to bare soil.
Use only natural fire wood
No construction debris or garbage can be burned.
Please completely extinguish the fire.
Do not ever leave the fire unattended.
You do not need to purchase a burning permit for a recreational cooking/campfire.
When you notice a small red flag flying at the City Gates, Fire Station and at the Police Station this means that there are burning restrictions in effect.
For daily updates on burning restrictions contact DNR @ 1-800-323-2876 or visitĀ www.wadnr.gov/burn-risk

I’ve seen where people have used old washtubs (from washing machines) as fire rings. They work very well because they have several holes in them to provide air. They just cut off the middle “post” section.
The issue of Residential Burning Permits was brought up at council and shows up in Resolution #604. It also is included in the Fee Schedule set forth by the Fire Department. It shows a 30 dollar annual fee. As was explained at council, this did include the recreational fires because most of them are used to clear brush around the houses and campground lots. They even stated the 3 foot round area with some specifics as to the cleared area around the fire pits. Council was told that they do inspections of the sites and also it helps in management of the fire threat.
Many times the rules are stated and then ignored here. Sort of like mandatory garbage. Always the at will exception. Also sort of like the sign ordinance.
CAC I believe answering questions is ok, if the right information is being given, but many times its incorrect, not complete, or incredibly biased while being under the guise of being nuetral. Crabber did suggest giving out hand outs at the entrance(look at the very first post in this thread) and CAC you informed us last week that you needed a burn permit for a small recreational fire in our back yard….. thats not the case according to the fire dept when I stopped in and asked them. I want to stop here, Im not trying to attack anyone and I apologize if thats what is being conveyed. I just think that a few people here perpetuate a continual feeling of negativity that is contagious and if they put thier efforts into something realistic or positive that they would be a great assest to this community, istead of being a cancer or source of constant discontent.
huh? Am I banned? : )
Can you say ” awaiting moderation”?
gotta watch what we say………..someone got burned and we got banned.
You said it Crabber. The fire rings could be used on the beach. That would be a “City” activity or State Parks activity.
If people want one for their home, go to a fabricator and get one made or buy the ones I posted.
As to yard waste, compost it. Then you are using it again to help the sandy soil here.
Maybe see if they want it at the community garden. If you have brush, you could possibly take it to the Jordan’s new facility near the Post Office.
As to “complaining” people here are answering the questions that others have about how things are regulated or controlled in reality and theory. We may have rules, but if no one follows them, we are fooling ourselves.
No one suggested passing out flyers at the gates. The suggestion was to put up signs, similar to the firework ones the city placed on Point Brown on the 4th of July.
what rules? we have absolutely none here in os. just ask any tourist. gate, what gate? this is what would be called a wide open town in the old west.just ask the devils who are supposed to be running the place.who said anything about handing out fire rings?
Im sure the city employee’s have plenty to do other than fabricate and hand out fire rings. How about the people who want to have fire’s be responsible and make thier own fire pit, that’s what I did before I lived in O.S. and it’s what Ive done now that Ive moved here. I dont believe small recreational fires on the beach or in the back-yard are the problem, but the larger brush piles people use to clear their yard waste is. For the people who complain about not having anything to do with thier yard waste, they need to suck it up and be thankful that the county allows them to burn at all. Other places Ive lived dont allow burning at all and all yard waste has to be hauled off. It seems that certain people just like complaining about any and all rules and talk about things they are not entirely true or that they are uneducated about.
Its good to question how things are done but being bored and stirring the pot as many of the people in this town do is a sin. Idle hands are the work of the devil. Maybe the people who just complain all the time should do something other than just write on the internet and actually put thier actions where their words are. EDITED Whew now that thats off my chest.
it’s just too bad the “powers that be” don’t read these threads. i guess staying on top of things would just be too easy. reading inputs from here should be required reading. if they are reading it maybe they’re just ignoring what the people think and care about. Tom, do you ever get any real feedback from the council or the mayor about what is written here?
The creation of these rings and solutions are easy if people have the will to get them done. People need structure, but at times structure takes over common sense. We do not need consultants etc. for such a simple task. It is just one of those get it done tasks. Heck, they could cut a surplus pipe with a torch to make the rings. Whatever it takes to get it done. Someone has to tell the city, just do it.
“who knows” brilliant post!
in Ocean Shores? nah
lets see we hire some consultants for a few hundred thousand to consider the feasibility of making fire rings, we then set up the plant and put people to work and discover that the fire rings are costing us an extra 10 % over what the consultants said they would cost, so we rehire the consultants to determine the true cost and in the mean time ………
I am sure there are enough welders around town that know how to fabricate them. I wish they would put some on the beach. Fires only in the fire rings. That way you don’t have all the broken glass and junk that gets burned everywhere. Huntington Beach in CA does it. Simple rings. I am sure they could be secured sufficently to prevent people from stealing them. Long stakes into the ground. Maybe we do like other beaches and say NO Glass. Garbage cans would be nice down there too for the summer. The tide does not come up as far as it does in the winter.
yeah, city employees could make them on the cheap and the proceedes could go into the fire/ems account.
There is a new line of work for someone!
Building fire pits.
i wasen’t talking a nice fancy one nor one for me. some cheepos that could be sold to folks as they enter town and get their burn ban flyer.
See Ace Hardware site: http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3532578&kw=fire&lmdn=Category&searchId=49595274283
They may be able to order it. Also, Cabela’s http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0026008516451a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCHFEAT_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=fire+ring&sort=all&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23
I have seen them at ACE. Also, in Aberdeen or Hoquiam, Harbor Saw, where they sell chainsaws, lawn equipment (have Honda residential and commercial now) and also I saw a fire ring.
if they are considered recreational fires, they have to have a ring of steel, stone or brick of at least 8″ tall. so, does anyone here in os sell fire rings?
Living here 21 years it has already got me!
Careful Gary!!! It could become habit forming.
Fires on the beach are considered recreational fires. They just have to be the 100 feet from the dunes.
Just toward your house Crabber…..:-o
signs signs everywhere a sign……………hmm, sounds good to me.also need them on chance. does the burn ban include the beach? winds carry embers toward the dunes.
I agree with CAC (excuse me, something in my throat),signs down Point Brown would be ideal.
There was a sign at the entrance of the city that said burn status with different colors. There is also one at the old fire department. I suspect that we will commission some contractor to build a new one instead of using the old one.
They do have VIPs at the Fire Department. They are volunteers that could hand out the fliers. However, people come all summer. How about using those signs down Point Brown?
how is this information given to folks just arriving for the weekend/summer? shouldn’t the fire department have a person posted at the entrance of os to give hand-outs to people as they enter town? i’m sure a burn ban is probably the last thing on vacationers minds as they get ready for the summer.
