Young and old pitching in
Ernie Johnson, SuperVolunteer, is over at the Chance approach, leading a team of volunteers picking up mounds of trash. Ken Lanfear, the Director of Public Works, is coordinating his crew as they load up and haul away two dump truck loads full of garbage.
Old-timer Arnold Samuels took time out from picking up “dirty diapers, all kinds of trash” to take this photo of Rebekah Midbrod, a young local helping clean up after the army of invaders:

Thank you Citizen, more good info!
Yes, I was also advised by a LeMay employee to contact Mark Cox about expanding our recycling services. She didn’t give me his contact info though, so thank you for that!
Here is the Grays Harbor site that may help you two: http://www.co.grays-harbor.wa.us/info/pub_svcs/recycle/index.htm
You can thank SWAC for having glass at a centralized site. Ms. Terry Veitz was on the committee that decided based upon a poll of 600 people at the County Fair where only 2 Ocean Shores citizens submitted ballots. Basically it would have cost us a couple of dollars more to have glass picked up at the home.
The issue was also dividing the colored glass. However, we all had the old bins which could have been used to divide the three colors.
They wanted to also speed up the process and reduce labor. The driver would have to get out and pick up three small bins.
If you combine the glass it causes issues in the secondary market value. So it has to be separated. Also, they did not want ot pay “pickers” to separate the glass at a central site.
For a current list of SWAC members or to find out about the next scheduled meeting, please call or e-mail, Mark Cox, at (360) 249-4222 ext. 436.
Thanks Ricki, I’ve put that in my favs too and got your e mail down, because you are right, this thread will die. : ) Mine is minnieyh at comcast dot net. We are truly spoiled here, but there are somethings that you just have to make the effort and time and expense to do, because you know it is the right thing. I bugged one of my friends this last year to take her light tubes in to recycle even though she had to pay (just pennies really) and I said ‘ now don’t you feel better ‘ and she said ‘no’ LOL We even now have a place to recycle the large styrofoam that comes in every piece of equipment you buy. I just have to remember to put it in the suv so I’ll take it there when I’m in the area : )
Lorraine, I have an e-mail exchange going with someone at LeMay trying to get more info (which has not been very productive thus far). So, I’ll let you know if I hear anything on my end too. If you want to get ahold of me via email it’s old quilt lover at hot mail dot com (no spaces). As I’m sure this thread will eventually die out
I don’t know anything on the hazardous waste, but I agree, if it’s too hard or inconvenient to do the right thing…not many will.
There are a couple of easy places in Aberdeen to take your old computer stuff and TV’s to, they participate in the e-cycle Washington program. I love that!
http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/swfa/eproductrecycle/
that is only place I am aware of – maybe someone else knows more – it is probably on those links I posted earlier today
it is on the main highway and if you are going to Olympia or elsewhere for another reason, and the timing is right you can get rid of things but a once a year opportunity locally for a few days (clean up dumping was 3 days this year – one load) would be wonderful whether it be at the city yard or the fire station
I know once years ago I took in something (flammable) when I was moving to the fire station where I had lived and handed it to them and said your problem and left but here we have things the prior home owners left when they moved.
I’ll check in to it further Ricki and get back to you…although with a bare lot address over there right now, I’m not how hard they will listen to me yet : ) As far as the once a year hazardous waste, that would be a prime idea especially since everyone comes from all over at this time of year to discard their waste, who knows…so you are saying the only site for hazardous waste disposal is east of Aberdeen?
one thing I would like to see (and maybe I am not informed well enough) is the ability to get rid of hazardous waste locally such as once a year during the city clean up week – taking things to east of Aberdeen is well, a nuisance
another thing I would like to see (and this is where I am lazy) is curbside glass recycling – again doesn’t have to be every 2 weeks like the other but maybe once every 2 months or maybe some youth group do it as a service project
as we get older it gets harder and harder to make all of these little side trips to do the “right thing”
Lorraine ~ I’m not sure how one proceeds with that. But I’m on board if anyone wants to drive that train!!!
composting is fine as long as the bears don’t pull your Earth Machine composter out of the ground – at least there wasn’t scattered garbage all over the place – we aren’t good as stirring up the mash snd there there easily could have been the other day – right now there are some big rocks sitting on the edge of the gadget hopefully holding it down but we sure had a raccoon family interested in it
Wow, I am spoiled…we now can recycle any plastic #1-#7! All together in the same bins. Thank you for the links, who knows, appreciate the info. At least we plan on composting over there so won’t need our yard waste recycler anymore. It took years for everyone over here to come to the conclusion that there was a need to recycle more items…land fill space becomes more of a premium with more dense population. Maybe we need to start lobbying the LeMay company to improve, or Grays Harbor county, whoever is primarily responsible.
The recycling is kind of odd though~ definitely not very progressive. They don’t take certain #’s of plastic like in other areas (most places take #1 and #2). They take a certain shape. The top has to be smaller than the bottom, such as it is with a milk jug and NOT like a yogurt container.
I’ve started trying to avoid buying things that can’t be recycled here but it’s tough.
glass needs to be taken in (bins near golf course as well as in Aberdeen I know), but papers, plastic, cans etc are in a big trash can you put out every 2 weeks
http://www.lemayinc.com is our refuse collection and there might be more information at http://www.co.grays-harbor.wa.us/info/pub_svcs/Recycle/WhenYouRecycle.htm
I keep wondering how you handle recycling over there? I recycle more than I throw away these days…is there somewhere to take your recyclables?
You are too kind, Lorraine.
Funny you should mention it, my husband suggested next year we bring Rebekah’s wagon. It has the bigger tires so would pull through sand okay. Would be easier on the back and shoulders to set the bag in the wagon…they got quite heavy.
I’d also like to see a place for recyclables in coming years, wouldn’t that be great?
I thought that was your little one Ricki, what a cutie and well taught child, to think of being eager to do the right thing so young means that you have been doing something right! We can’t wait to join you all in the clean up, in fact every time we walk out the Marine View Drive beach approach we see bags of garbage that people have dumped in the dunes and the first time I saw that I told my husband, well, add a wagon to our list of needs for when we move over.
“Old timer,” but not old!
Don’t let Arnold hear you call him an old timer….
Was nice to hear the ham operators coordinating things.

There were a lot of people out there without blue bags. A lot of us, early this morning, brought our own bags and took what we picked up home. I have to give a shout out to ALL who were ‘picking up’! By noon today, when we returned to Taurus run Belle, (dog ~ just in case anyone thought we were pushing grandma down the beach) everything looked really great. You know, we all have our quirks, opinions and differences with city government and the community club, but all-in-all, the folks who live here are a pretty damn good team. Tom and I are proud to live among you. (Everyday is proof why we all love it here!)
You were probably being funny (I know sarcasm doesn’t always come through in type), but just in case anyone else was wondering, a couple of reasons:

(highly suggest watching that video!).
why pick it up? the next big storm will wash it out to sea and deposit a nice big piece of driftwood for tourists to burn.
That’s my girl
If not for that child we’d have happily slept in this morning. But she was standing at the foot of our bed at 7:30 with a concerned look asking, “aren’t we going to pick up litter at the beach?”.
Yes dear…yes we are, just let me get my coffee!
And I’m so glad we went! It was nice to be with such a great group, all out there just for the sake of helping out! Thank you to all of the people who help coordinate it.
