Damp it!
This misty weather might not be ideal for picnics; on the other hand, it should dampen the dunes. Last night behind “hotel row,” there was at least one dunes fire (quickly extinguished by the OSFD, which has “battle stations” set up).

Maybe some permanent signs on the speed limit signs all around town. Not just Point Brown at the gates and on the beach approaches. They could be there all year round. Simply saying Fireworks Illegal except on ocean beach. Lots of stuff down at the marina too this time. More than one paper sign on a post at the Damon Point State Park roadway.
Then it is a constant reminder for those that come here any time of the year.
Also, why are there campground sites with tents only? I thougth you had to have a camper. Maybe we need to have water as a requirement for camping at any lot. Then they have it for those open fire pits. Somewhere the city has lost control of sensible protection of life and property.
Ok, I need to vent also. With all the press, all the signs, all the everything about do it on the beach, this was the loudest most blatant disregard of the laws that I have ever seen in Ocean Shores. People were sitting in their lawn chairs as they encouraged there kids (grandkids) to shoot bottle rockets from their docks into Duck Lake and beyond and the friggin BOOMERS, those sounded like small sticks of dynamite. They were everywhere in town. Don’t these people know this is not Iraq, would they do this at their homes? I know all of my animals were scared to death and what about the wild animals? Maybe though some of the bears moved on. That’s it.
hey Mark. you are not alone. my neighbor call about a bon fire in the front yard, next door, and fireworks going off on a regular basis. the police came by, did not get out of his brand new ford and actually did not even slow down. we do not the gestapo, just police that are willing to do what they are paid for.
Having the regs posted where people drive by it is not going to get it done. People are not paying much attention to things posted by the roads into town or on the beach accesses. If they have the regs posted where they’re “living” and have them handed to them with the keys, they have no excuse for “not knowing” what they are. Maybe they (the renters) should even be required to sign or initial that they received them.
Sure, some will still ignore them. World’s full of that kind of people. Even some full time residents will ignore them and claim ignorance.
I think there should be a zero tolerance policy. No warnings. If you get caught violating the regs, a ticket is issued. Sure the police can’t be everywhere at once, but when they catch someone, give ‘em a ticket. Like the idiots last night who were shooting off aerial fireworks on the black rock between the front of the Collins Inn and the road, less then 20 feet from the Inn, 30 feet from one of the Inn’s Seaside Cabins, and 10 feet from a vehicle. A police car came by as they were doing it and stopped to talk to them, then drove off. Half an hour later they were back out there doing it again!
I personally witnessed a report of a violation where a city patrol officer drove up, observed the illegal fireworks being ignited, didn’t even get out of the car, and just drove off after about 5 minutes. Its not a lack of officers, its a lack of enforcement.
such is life living in a “who gives a hoot town”.
Only a blind man or deaf man could have missed the display over Rain near Duck Lake Drive. It went on for hours and was an assortment of colors and bangs.
As to tourist knowing, there are signs down Point Brown and at the beach access points. It is simply a matter of who cares. They know the facts. We could never have enough fire or police personnel out around town to cite all of them. That is the reality. Next year will be the same.
Tney well sell them the same time period. Only the discharge will be restricted:
only on the Fourth of July between the hours of 12:00
o’clock p.m. and twelve o’clock midnight and from six o’clock p.m. on December 31st until one o’clock a.m. on January 1st of the subsequent year, or as provided in RCW 70.77.311 or as otherwise allowed by this chapter. Effective June 27th,
2011.
Once they have them in their hands from any source they will be discharged. I do not think people will only come here for the day and leave. More wasted paper. If you can’t enforce a code because of either will or resources, it should be repealed.
Every rental owner or manager should be REQUIRED to clearly post the fireworks regulations in their properties as well as hand a copy to the renters when they are handed the keys.
Sure, some will ignore it anyway, but I’d bet there’s a lot who simply don’t know what the regs are!
i was actually hoping for an inch or so of rain to start at 7pm. dang the bad luck. i have only been here three years. i have noticed the “lets just throw our hands up” attitude of a heck of a lot of people. if i had known of what life is really like here i would have opted out and bought in nevada or some other place where law enforcement has some pull. it seems as if barney fife and andy taylor are in charge around here. if i could sell and move out i sure as heck would.
Robert has it right. However, they should have some of the fire department personnel driving around doing the citations too. We should have boot drives to generate money to support the services offered or put a special tax on the fireworks sold. However, you will hear from all the non-profits that they are hurt by the tax and “this is the only revenue they get.” So, city leaders will bend over backwards to support them rather than support the residents.
There is one campground site over on Woodland Lp that has renewed their camping permit 3 times this year. It ends on 7/15/2010 this time. I wonder how soon it will be renewed again without Clarie knowing. On Weatherwax Lp there is a new concrete driveway over the right of way. Code calls for that to be asphalt or rock. Did they have a permit? Was one needed? Did anyone notice it? You do not need permits in Ocean Shores to do anything these days. Just do it and see if they figure it out. People cut the reeds down on the lakes right in the water and no-one will see that either. Even when trash from it floats away. Maybe once a month we will see the police boat. EDITED That needs to be changed in the contract negotiations in the future.
People are totally ignoring the ban on fireworks inside city limits and they’re brazen about it. There’s a place on Weatherwax loop that set off a bunch of fireworks then left all the trash for someone else to pick up. Maybe it’s time we banned the sale within the city limits as well and stiffen the fines. Not that it would do any good since we don’t have enough police officers to enforce what we have now.
