you know crabber, i wish i knew. i had harvested some sea stars last year with my kids and was rudely confronted by a fishermans wife. the only ones we actually brought home were ones that had oddities. 6 legs, 4 legs or ones that had stubs for legs. i dont think we got more than 6 last year. at the time i was fully aware of my rights to do so with the license i had at the time, same one i get every year.
since im disabled, i get the combo license, which im told covers everything in the book.
guess i should thank you, i was planning a trip to damon point tomorrow to look for sea stars.
thank you!
hey Cutie. the only reason i knew to look for the info was that i saw a very small article in the daily world about 4 weeks ago. also, changes are “usually” highlighted in the regs. not so with this one. more folks are probably unaware of the change than are aware of it. was this just an oversite by the state or?
i stand corrected and as i did state in my first post, “i wouldnt advise anyone harvesting anything without checking with the department of fish and wildlife to make sure you have the proper license.” so i did just that and you are right. however, there was a time in the not to distant past, harvesting sea stars was allowed with the right license. i know becuase i consulted with a fish and wildlife game wardon when i had questions about that as well.
please understand, im not one to break any laws or would i intentionally encourage anyone else to do so. i have the up most respect for this area, its wildlife and anything i do, i do within the law.
page 132 states”an unclassified invertebrate is any shellfish species not defined as shellfish on page 19. examples include: shore crabs, graceful crabs, sea stars, sand dollars, moon snails, shore snails, marine worms and nudibranchs. NO HARVEST ALLOWED”
pagr 19 lists all species of harvestable shellfish whether live or relic shell.
this is directly from the 2010/2011 SPORTFISHING RULES PAMPHLET.
read the rules then proceede as youe concience dictates.
in response to your comment crabber, your partially right about harvesting star fish. it is against the law only if you do not have a license to do so. according to the washington state department of fish and wildlife fishing handbook, star fish may be harvested with a combination license. this particular license covers all fish, shell fish, star fish and other sea life.
without it, yes it is against the law. i wouldnt advise anyone harvesting anything without checking with the department of fish and wildlife to make sure you have the proper license.
great days coming up. low tides for all to look at critters in tidal pools. remember to inform your guests and neighbors that it has become against the law to remove starfish, hermit crabs and the like from their habitat. check out the new fishing regs before venturing out this weekend. have a nice weekend.
I hope they are right!
