From the County: The National Weather Service in Seattle has downgraded the High Wind Warning the for the Coastal areas of Washington. There is still a High Surf Advisory in effect until 5pm Thursday evening with waves in the 20 foot range which will cause localized beach erosion and rip currents.
The current forecast still has winds gusting 35 to 40 mph in Westport, Ocean Shores and the beach areas early this morning. Sustained West Southwest winds of 20-30 mph are expected early but will to subside to 15-18 mph through the day.
Thunderstorms are predicted to occur after 11am.
During a High Surf Advisory, be extremely careful around the beaches, rocks and jetties as waves will run much farther than normal and will be strong enough to sweep a person from a jetty or an unwary beach walker out to sea. DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK TO THE SEA! High surf will also toss logs and debris onto beaches and rocks.
The County fared well through the storm with gusts over 55 to 60 mph registered in many areas along the Coast. There were many fallen tree limbs but power outages were at a minimum with one substantial outage near Quinault with 1300 persons losing power. At this time all power has been restored.

The sand is actually accumulated and taken by builders to put on lots as fill. The State Parks Board just approved collection at the State Park for use in the cranberry bogs.
Thank you Al. That’s a neat way to dispose of it…and I imagine the waves knock the piles down eventually. In the meantime I’ve seen kids playing on them, so a fun use of them.
Lorraine, The excess sand is what they remove from the roadways, as the wind blows it in from the beach, to keep the roadways clean. It is periodically removed after it accumulates to a point where the volume becomes too massive to handle efficiently.
Just a question of curiousity to whomever might have the answer. Are the piles of sand I’ve seen a few times, like right now, on the beach at the Chance approach, for some specific purpose? If so, what?
Lucky we missed the big wind, PUD did a great job of trimming after the 1 week outage in 2007, or was it 08? Whew!
I find my deck furniture in Olympia!
