This afternoon’s “study session”
Councilman Bob Crumpacker complained of the Library Board’s recommendation for a 22 cent levy (which will be presented tonight):
“Quite frankly, I’m offended by this request. I think it’s too much . . . People need to get the idea we’re not a Cadillac anymore. We’re a Chevy.”
Chief Mike Styner reiterated the need for more police personnel: “The guys are working too much, the work load is getting out of hand, and we’re just getting into the busy season.”
Finance Director Art Wuerth on the first quarter, 2010:
“We’re right on target with revenues, so that’s good news . . .On the expenditure side, in general most of the departments are on budget or close to budget. Overall, the city is running a little bit ahead of schedule.”

Tears of laughter are getting in my keyboard, thanks to Tom Scanlon, MikeO and Citizen’s police car! But, I hate to see Bob’s choice of analogy taken so seriously.
I used to think it was tourism, but now I see that real estate is our industrial purpose, with tourism as a means to that end.
The Ocean Shores vision is, as near as I can tell:
“metropolitan families with stylish summer homes safely enjoying their amenities and toys in a rich natural environment near their healthy retired elders”
You can switch “metropolitan families” and “healthy retired elders” to see this same vision from the other perspective.
“healthy retired elders with stylish summer homes safely enjoying their amenities and toys in a rich natural environment near their metropolitan families”
New roads, a trendy run-about (as my husband calls it), magnificent fire station, shiny trucks and SUV’s, classy city hall, parks and sanctuaries everywhere–we are ready to sell that vision! All we need is progress in the rest of the country.
Tourism is not really our industry. I think it is part of our sales department. I agree we need to chat it up like crazy. We need to offer as many invitations as possible. I keep all problems of Ocean Shores to myself, as much as I can, because I own properties here, which I hope, will supplement my income some day, if anybody will buy it.
As far as budgeting is concerned, I would rather be joyriding in my Cadillac. But until the economy comes out of its coma, my Caddy is used more like a Chevy. Even so, I still have to keep it polished, so it will always be of value as a classic.
Yeah? Well, what’s my point? I dunno.
Maybe we should have hired 1/2 Code Enforcement and 1/2 Police Officer as one person. Then the person could arrest the person who does not listen to their orders as to Code Enforcement or Police orders. Then the office would have teeth.
I think we need to focus on keeping our saftey service personnel safe first of all. From my understanding, our Police and Fire Departments are down critical manpower, this is unsatisfactory. We need to focus on hiring back our “core” personnel back, which is by far, our Police and Fire Departments. I believe Chief Styner is right, he is down Officers, our safety should come first, we should all be onboard with this. Just thought I would put my two cents in!
Code Enforcement Officer has always been effective…until someone decided to cut costs. Instead of Citizens Against Crime (like who isen’t) why not another group to support OCean Shores, why compartmentalize it? There has always been these well meaning groups and what happens? NOTHING. Years ago we had enough police, fire & EMT’s to take care of any contingencies. The problem is not where to cut, its where to tax and again bring more tourists here…bazinga!
Don’t worry, Council is now deciding to hire an additional officer. We will see if all the talk about public safety is true or not.
However, I would rather see a code enforcement officer hired because it appears that many of the neighborhood issues are grounded in those issues.
Maybe we could get those taken care of by the building inspector. I hear of more and more violations that are causing disputes that lead to assaults and vandalism. Then the police tell people that it is a code enforcement issue and there is nowhere to turn.
Gary, You are exactly right, so when the city has a problem and someone sues the city, which is cheaper? Gee,lets see! What we need is an overhaul of the City COuncil & Mayor.
Ocean Shores is a TOURIST city first, thats how the bills in the city are paid, no getting over it. We have so much to offer to bring people here, they spend $$ and go home, tell friends and so on.
Let’s see, we have 4 1/2 patrolmen, 1/2 of a detective, 3 Sergeant’s, an assistant chief and a chief. You have to figure that there are more than half of them off at a time what with days off and running two shifts a day.
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we are in for a real hurt this summer!
Ocean Shores is a Chevy Mr. Crumpacker because thats what you want to project. It has always been Ocean Shores’ problem, no one loves Shores enough to treat it with respect and concern for its future. Everyone wants to be on the cheap….so thats how they get treated.
Ocean Shores is a beautiful and great place and many of the “cheapsters” do not deserve to live here.
Get a grip people, bring $$$ here with tourists. Let people do nightly rentals, but put a high price on a license, like $500.00 yearly. That way we know where they are, anyone caught nightly renting without a license, BIG fine. If there is a problem and it reaccurs then the license is pulled, with no refund, So the city gets the bed tax and B & O tax etc. Make Shores a friendly place to be not a place of infighting and crabby locals!!
So many of the “cheapsters” have not lived in Shores long enough to even know about the history, they just want to live really cheap, at the beautiful OCean Shores’detriment.
It is a real shame to see members of our city council selling us off as a Chevy. If you think like a used car you will be a used car. Why not think big and be better than this guys vision for our city.
However this is all we can afford: http://www.6mt.net/forum/general-discussion/823-yugo-police-car.html
I was thinking more along the lines that the City was a Toyoto with a sticky gas pedal…..
