3,000,000 per year? Sounds like someone took a estimate from one of our busier days (Sun & Sawdust or Razor Clam, etc.) and “projected”.
Thanks for the laughs this morning folks! Especially you Rafael : ) I have to admit when we were there on Memorial Day weekend last year I honestly thought there were at least 3 million trying to get in and out of IGA! Truly though, at least 75 – 80% of our visits are day trips and I happen to know a few other people over here in our neck of the woods that do day trips as well. It’s only a little over 2 hour drive, a couple of retired friends drove over last Friday the 19th, for the day, to get fish from IGA Deli and eat it on the beach and enjoy the sunshine. She complains about their price, but she makes an aproximately 260 mile round trip for it, go figure. It is good fish. I have only seen police vehicles twice in all our visits in the last 18 months, guess we don’t know where to look, although I was stopped on 109 and given a speed warning by a state trouper about a year ago, sorry, no gun here, but a lead foot sometimes. I apologized to him like a good citizen. I feel bad for them when I see them aproaching me and my car so cautiously, but after reading the article in this weeks NCN on the confrontation with a man with a rifle, and all of the other incidents that have happened in our state this past few months, I can certainly understand their caution.
It’s only 8200+ a day. I swore I saw that many in the IGA when I was there a couple days ago. With only about 1000 places of lodging in the city, there must be thousands sleeping on the beach at night. Maybe we ought to get the city to set up some tents and homeless shelters for all those homeless transients.
Just a note to settle the 3 million visitors to Ocean Shores question. Some time in the early 90’s a gentleman put out a glossy brochure touting Ocean Shores. In it he stated that Ocean Shores has 3 million tourists a year. The counting strip at the gate verified this I guess as we locals cross it as many as 6 times a day. However it became an urban legend and has been used many times to justify our tourists. Anyone with common sense can do the math and see what Ocean Shores would look like if we had 3 million tourists!
18 log entries that could be listed as criminal acts. 5ooo people. .0036% are wrong doers. i do not know how many police(patrol) officers we actually have. say it’s 8. that means only .0016%(or so) of have protection. if they are all on duty at the same time. my numbers are probably wrong or not really valid but who cares. mr “i’ve got a glock”
Population as of 4/12/09 was 4866. As soon as it goes over 5000, all those small city grants disappear. Good guess but not close enough, Cox.
I’m not confused, I’m only going by what the state considers a way to count the visitors and I believe local traffic is calculated into the factor. If you don’t believe their methodology then please explain the proper one to us all. Your “estimates” are meaningless unless you stand at the gate and ask everyone who comes in if they live here or not.
Crime free and danger to police officers are not the same nor did I say there is a criminal behind every tree. It makes no difference how “crime free” a town is: there is still danger to our police officers. Most of the people stopped for traffic or those involved in domestic violence are not criminals to start with yet those are the two most dangerous times for police officers. We have both in Ocean Shores.
I’m almost 66 years old and have never had the need for a weapon of any kind – except when I was in Viet Nam. If owning a weapon makes you feel secure, more power to you. I hope you never have to use it. Oh, by the way there are more deaths from home accidents with weapons than by home invasions.
Crabber, the estimate population in 2008 was just over 5,000. The 2000 census had us at 3,836.
what is the exact population of ocean shores?
You are very confused about the 3 million visitors. That number is calculated by how many times a tire crosses the counter at the gate multiplied by a factor of something like 2.3. I would estimate that about half of those visitors are delivery trucks and residents entering and leaving the city during the year, and people going back and forth to their vacation homes on the weekend.
My false sense of security is accompanied by a Glock 19 and a carry permit. You have to have lived in a larger city to appreciate how crime free our city actually is. The old scenario about there being a criminal behind every tree is just not rational in this town.
Two of the most dangerous situations for police are domestic disputes and traffic stops. You will notice, rafael, there are quite a few of those in the report. We also get some three million+ visitors here every year and they cause problems, too. I don’t know how many police officers are on duty at any given time now that we’ve reduced the force by four, but if it’s not at least two patrol officers, then we have big problems.
We are all lulled into a false sense of security because we live in a small town, but believe me, there are people in this city that have no respect for the law or those who try to enforce it. Even though several years ago I spoke out against hiring another police officer, we now have enough population to warrant at least two patrol officers on duty at all times. Not to do so is endangering our police force and our citizens.
I hope I never see an attack on one of our officers reported in the police log because someone thinks we have too many police.
Looks like an uncontrollable crime wave to me. We need at least 20 more members on the force to get this under control.
Thanks,Tom. I’m glad to see this feature return. I enjoy knowing what may be going on in the neighborhood.
