Both basketball teams lose
The boys and girls basketball teams lost their playoff openers; both have win-or-done games Saturday.
Tigers 77, Hyaks 43
ROCHESTER — Napavine’s height disrupted North Beach’s offense and its ability to rebound during this opening round contest in the District IV 2B tournament.
The Tigers, the Central League champions, dominated the boards, according to North Beach coach Larry Moore, and had several chances per possession to score.
“Their length hurt our shooters,” said Moore. “We just couldn’t handle them on the boards. We’d have one shot, then they’d get extra shots on the other end. They shut us down, basically. Napavine played really well and we had a tough time with their length.”
Freshman Preston Vick led the Hyaks with 12 points and 11 rebounds, earning coach Moore’s praise for his work.
“In the first half, he had all of our rebounds, except for one,” added Moore.
Derek Moore knocked down 12 points and Derek Archer added 11 for North Beach.
On Saturday, North Beach (9-12) will take on the loser of the Willapa Valley-White Pass contest in a loser-out game at a location to be determined.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pirates 57, Hyaks 42
CENTRALIA — Unable to find the range from either the floor or foul line, North Beach was upended by Adna in the opening round of the District IV Class 2B tournament on Monday at Centralia.
The Hyaks (15-5) will face the loser of Thursday’s Naselle-Napavine game in a loser-out contest Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
North Beach shot only 28 percent from the field and hit just 5 of 18 free throws.
“We didn’t execute well on the offensive end,” Hyak coach Brett Mackey lamented. “Defensively, I thought we played good enough to win, but we didn’t take care of the boards the way we should have either.”
Leading 35-30 entering the final period, the Pirates widened the gap by hitting three 3-point shots early in the quarter. The Hyaks were never closer than nine the rest of the way.
Nicole Mosley paced North Beach with 14 points.
Adna’s Taylor Hoke led all scorers with 17 points.
