High Surf + Thousands of Visitors
Big waves and surging sea, high tide approaching, sun breaks luring tourists out to the potentially dangerous spots like Damon Point and the Jetty; the latter is where a visitor broke his leg yesterday at high tide; today kids and adults are scampering all over the rocks, shrieking with delight at the big wave show.
National Weather Service alert:
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM PST THIS EVENING.
SWELLS OF 20 TO 22 FEET ARE CURRENTLY BEING REPORTED BY THE COASTAL BUOYS THIS MORNING. THESE SWELLS WILL CONTINUE TO ROLL ONSHORE THROUGH THE DAY BEFORE GRADUALLY SUBSIDING OVERNIGHT AND MONDAY.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY MEANS THAT HIGH SURF WILL AFFECT BEACHES IN THE ADVISORY AREA… PRODUCING RIP CURRENTS AND LOCALIZED BEACH EROSION. ALSO… IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO FISH OR OBSERVE WAVES FROM ROCKS DURING HIGH SURF CONDITIONS. UNWARY BEACH WALKERS CAN BE CAUGHT OFF GUARD AS WAVES SUDDENLY RACE FARTHER UP THE BEACH THAN NORMAL.

Did you see (King 5 news last (2/14) night) that rogue wave in Half Moon Bay, CA that swept some 30 people off a jetty down there? It happened yesterday. They were watching a surfing contest and SWOOSH, this huge wave came in and wiped them all out! They were all focused on the contest and no one saw the wave coming. Simply a miracle no one was killed or washed out to sea but I guess there were broken bones galore. The video of that wave and the onlookers is INCREDIBLE! Anybody who thinks that our jetty is a great viewing stand for high surf needs to see this video.
