People Unclear on the Concept
“Wow, look at these great parking spaces!”
C’mon, people . . . do we go to Seattle and park on your new sidewalks?

Would everyone be that excited if they were wheelchairs instead of cars? Just consider them large wheelchairs for the mentally handicapped and everything will be fine.
When they start parking in the roundabout along the center sidewalk is when you should get concerned. If you’ve ever spent any time in continental Europe, jumping the curb and parking half on the sidewalk in the older burgs is the preferred parking method. Please stop picking on the foreigners.
Well people, even tourist, need sidewalks to get around town. Why build them if they are not used for the purpose they were designed for? Mind if I crap on your front steps? They were not built for that, but I am a tourist and have to go to the bathroom.
is it possible that our local businesses do not want folks ticketed for bad parking habits and jaywalking? when i drove tour jeeps in sedona, az, we were told not to ruffle the feathers of tourists as they may not return to our fair city. this advice was also conveyed to the police. tourists had the run of the town, just like here.
lIKE LEMMINGS ONE GUY PARKED AND THE REST FOLLOWED. gIVE THEM A SIDEWALK AND THEY WILL PARK
Ordinance No.875: 2nd Reading 2010 Budget
An Ordinance of the City Council of the City of Ocean
Shores, Washington, adopting the 2010 Budget.
Art Wuerth gave the second reading of the Ordinance by title.
There have been three public hearings on the 2010 budget and
it is required to adopt the budget by December 31, 2009.
When comparing budgets, the 2008 budget was $8.3 million
and in 2010 the budget is $6.3 million.
The general fund balance in 2008 was $2.3 million and in 2010 it is $611,000.
The minimum number for the general fund cash flow is
$750,000, not $611,000 as previously mentioned. The 2010
Post Recommended Budget replaces Exhibit A in the budget.
Council questioned whether Springbrook will assist in
identifying negative funds sooner than in the past.
Art Wuerth commented that the City’s cash flow will be closely
monitored and monthly presentations will be made to Council.
There were no public comments.
Tape 2, #2149 – Councilmember Skewis made the motion to
approve the Ordinance as written. Councilmember Johnson
seconded the motion. The Motion passed unanimously.

The 2010 Ocean Shores budget shows the police get $1,403,308, 29% of the year’s estimated General Fund in the 2010 Post Recommended Budget Supplemental approved by council on December 14, 2010. Other City departments get $0 after March 31, 2010.
Well Reily, since you know the numbers, why don’t you post them? Let’s start with the Library and also show the source of funds, the Grant Money and not City Money. Oh, The IC? How about that fund raiser they just did? Citizens and not the city!!! Even with the fewer officers, it is still the largest “Department”. Also, it is considered a department in the city. They just do not call it the “Library Department”. One could just use the words Police, Fire, EMS, Public Works and Finance. It has a separate ledger number just like the others. So put up your numbers. Someone out on extended leave. Do they still get paid? By what source? How about those sick days they accumulate over all the years. 1320 hours allowable.
However, the bottom line is still that the city is losing money each day. We have a negative cashflow. Ask any council person. That is first and foremost on their minds. We may not have a city soon. That would mean no Police, Fire, EMS, Public Works, Finance or council and mayor. Have you figured how to resolve that issue?
Oh, I get it, Rainy. You were using the “Recommended” budget, which isn’t the actual budget. The actual Budget was set on December 31. A lot changed between the 10th and the 31st, and after that. They have two less officers now, which was not accounted for in the “Recommended Budget” which was just that, “recommended”. And I still don’t see any Departments that are getting $0 after March 31. Let’s try to stick to the facts here and not use old and outdated information, or make assumptions. They are keeping the library and the interpretive center open for the time being but those are not “Departments”. Why don’t you get the actual budget before you post next time?

Reilly, great comment in ref to amount of police officers and ems personnel. I can’t wait to see what happens in the spring and summer (ie July 4th)
we could probably get it done here at the beach if we all didn’t spend so much time on our computers. lol
Some places in Washington use the VIPs or Crime Watch volunteers to be parking ticket people. They also do the handicapped parking spots.
Rainy, Which City Departments are those? And where did you get your numbers?
we need a “lovely rita meter maid” type of person. a moped and a ticket book. not a real policeman, mind you, just a ticket writer. any volunteers?
The 2010 Ocean Shores budget shows $4,901,835 used for spending.
The police get $1,403,308, 29% of that. Other City departments get $0 after March 31, 2010
With that kind of money given to the police department, police should not allow non taxpayers to park on our new sidewalks for any reason.
The only conclusion one can come to is we have a very lazy police department that is way overpaid.
“Where are our police?”
Let’s see, three of them were laid off, one retired and his position will not be filled, one is on extended personal leave, and the others who are likely overworked and exhausted working all that overtime were probably down at the jetty trying to keep more looky-loos off the rocks and keep them from breaking body parts. At least until the ambulance got back from the first transfer. Just a guess.
Ticket and Tow!!!! Where are our Police? Where are the signs saying to park behind the bowling alley or Connection?
HOW RUDE! Are we going to be giving tickets out for this behavior? We probably have some nice, new oil stains on our pretty new sidewalks. Must have been a follow the leader type of deal…one moron parks there and other morons follow suit.
New sign: NO IDIOT PARKING ON SIDEWALKS
Come on people, I’m from Seattle and I’m not that much of a moron…..some people are just clueless and it dosn’t matter where they come from! Seriously, did you fall down laughing Tom before you could get up and take the picture?
As my wife and I were coming home from IGA a few days after the sidewalks to the post office were put in, we encountered some moron walking down the street! Not the side of the street; not the pretty new sidewalk; IN the street – forcing traffic into the other lane. Don’t know who is the biggest moron, him or these drivers.
Saw that coming. Just wait till 4th of July. Nice capture Tom!
Hmmmm—they are even going in different directions!
Wow~ that was a laugh out loud moment! Thanks for the chuckle.
And I’m thinking this is probably in front of the bowling alley where parking is at a premium on a rainy holiday weekend.
How about parking meters there?
After Lanfear spends over 3 million dollars on a roundabout, he didn’t possess the design and safety criteria to put wheel stops along the convention center sidewalk? They should be there for no other reason than to protect pedestrians on the sidewalk and provide a buffer/stop point to keep vehicles from sticking their bumpers into the walkway. They’re about $25 apiece. Seattle people are probably used to competent design engineering and don’t know how to react when it’s missing.
Seriously?
In Seattle they would call a Tow Company, why shouldn’t we? Or can’t the police give them a ticket for parking on the sidewalk? More revenue for the city.
