Wrestlers off to strong start
First home match tonight, vs Hoquiam.
From Coach Maynard Reed:
Placing five of its six wrestlers entered in the Ocosta Invitational Saturday, the North Beach wrestling team had a promising start to the 2009-10 season. Overall the team placed fourth in the tournament. It had three wrestlers in the finals. Dominic Deibel won the 119 pound weight class by “dominating” the competition. In his first match of the night, he pinned his opponent in the first round won by technical fall in the finals match, 15-0. Anthony Tignino placed second at 125 pounds, wrestling a formidable opponent from single A division Rainier High School. At the 285 pound weight class, Sawyer Reed won one of the more exciting matches of night (9-7 against Cody Reed of Elma) in the final seconds to get to the finals. There he faced familiar foe Tim Helman of Ocosta in a close contest before being pinned in the third round. Kaleb Towery, the Hyaks’ freshman 140 pound wrestler, lost a close first match against Tyler Bird of Ocosta, but came back and won his next two matches to place third. Newcomer Robby Patton, a light 189 pounder, wrestled hard all tournament and placed fourth. Jennifer Law and Eric Shepard also wrestled well in their exhibition matches.
Coach Maynard Reed commended his team for their all-around good performance Saturday. An inexperienced group, the Hyaks are still learning and perfecting their technique but are wrestling and practicing hard. This hard work will pay off as the season progresses. Reed named Kaleb Towery “Hyak of the Week,” an honor given to the wrestler who the coaches feel worked hard in practice and wrestled well in the tournament. Given everyone’s great work ethic and strong performances, this was a tough pick, but Kaleb won out because he overcame some “rookie” mistakes, showed a lot of heart, and wrestled extremely well.
The Hyaks have their first home duel vs. a Hoquiam contingent Thursday starting at 6 p.m. They travel just east of the mountains to Granger High School’s annual “Ironman” tournament Saturday.
