Slight delay in new water rate study
Originally, the results of the new water rate study (factoring in the $3 million grant and $3 million at 1 percent interest loan) were to be delivered to City Council by the end of the year, based on water superintendent Miles Beach’s presentation at the beginning of November. The dates have been pushed back, says Beach via email:
“The contract for the rateĀ update was changed from 30 to 45 working days for completion, inĀ consideration of the holidays. With that said, we should have the update by mid January with a formal report to council in February.”

This is only the third attempt at a water rate study and they ignored the first two, so why should this be any different? Has anyone looked at the 2010 budget to see the surplus money in the sewer budget carried over from last year? Your water and sewer rates will go down as soon as the city declares bankruptcy and it is taken over either by a private company or the county, who will actually have to justify the new rates. Why should the city give up their golden calf?
The holidays are on the calendars. So is the 4th of July. Maybe we should start boot drives now so we can afford to protect all those people. Maybe we can get the National Guard to patrol the beach!!! It would be like Mexico.
Someone please tell Miles Beach to go over to Ace and get one of those free calendars and hang it on the wall, then send him over to the grade school to get instructions on how to use a calculator. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are three days the last time I looked.
How can we even contemplate getting a water rate refund when the city is using the water utility as their “cash cow”?
Let’s add things up for a minute–1.6 mil from the cost allocation table, 796K this June and now another 622K. That’s 3 million or $600 per resident. Remember also, that the 796k and the 622k are three year loans. What magic wand are they going to wave to pay that money back in three years? I know what we can do–get another loan from the water utility in 2011 to pay back the first two loans. Keep sending in those water bill checks.
Did they not realize the holidays were there when the date was set?
Do we really want the water rates to go down? Where will we go for inter-agency loans? If they don’t have the money in the water utility we will have to stop spending.
This seems normal for this city.Delay, delay delay. The water rates will most likely go down when the Library reopens.
How dare they blindside him with the holidays.
