R.I.G. the Paper this Thursday
Readers Input Group, a.k.a. “R.I.G. the Paper,” meets Thursday, 10 a.m., at the Ocean Shores Library (ironically enough). Agenda:
*Any “Hail Mary” ideas to save the Library/Interpretive Center? Other comments on the 2010 Recommended Budget?
*Should the “comments policy” of northcoastnews.com be altered, or more strictly enforced? (Currently, only the most blatant violations are being deleted.) Should commenters be required to use their real names? Should there be a word limit (as in Letters to the Editor)? Or should this digital sandbox referee just “let the kids play”?

Thank you, HITS. I did not originally see that exchange. Here’s what I did: I deleted the portion of the posting that you correctly pointed out was out-of-bounds; I deleted a portion of the comment that preceded, that was also in violation of the “no personal attacks” policy; and, finally, I deleted the portion of your posting that referenced the violation (you didn’t do anything wrong, it just wouldn’t make sense to delete it somewhere and still have it here).
And I’m not arguing against your anonymity.
**If you see anything else in the future that you feel is personal, attacking, etc., please email me directly tscanlon@northcoastnews.com.
Tom,
It was not deleted, here is the page:

(COMMENTS DELETED)
My point is that if I said who i am and somebody made the connection to EMT, fire or police that I would get the same response. that I don’t want any of them to lose their job becaue of my personal gain. I think that takes away from the argument. No one wants to lose their jobs and their family suffers but it alsmost seems like a few people in this town would like to see the city workers in these jobs and their families ruined by a layoff.
It just makes it feel like this is a hostile and unforgiving place to live if you are friends with or related to anyone working at the fire station or police station.
Hanging: I’m glad you’ve decided to join in, but sorry you felt you would get grief if you used your real name. I searched for that comment about the u-haul and did not find anything; maybe I already deleted it (which would have been the proper course for any comment as out of bounds as that).
I have never felt comfortable to post on here because of who I am related to and who I have friendships with in this community. It never ocurred to me to not use my real name (until now) and I just simply never wrote in. If you are a friend or family member of a police or firefighter/emt it seems you would get blasted for having an opinion that supported them. A lot of my friends feel the same way so we dont participate. I saw a post on here where it looked like someone thought one of the posters was married to a cop and made a comment in response asking whether she would need help packing her u-haul if they cut another police position. I was thinking “Whoa! that’s exactly what I have been afraid of if I speak out in support” – being blasted for my ties and not at all the point I am trying to make. So I appreciate being able to particpate without worrying my children will be ridiculed or I will be approached in the grocery store. So please don’t make it required to use real names. I now feel i can voice my opinion out there with the rest of them.
In deference to the discussion here I used my real name. However if we look back in history and literature we find that Charles Dickens and Charles Lamb had no problem using another name. The autor Nora Roberts has two names as do the writers of halequin novels. Indeed they have many names.
Sports figures in many cases are better know by their nick names A Rod, Junior. the Brown Bomber In politics we have “shrub”honest Abe”, and “silent Cal”.Most of these important people are better known by their alias, and it is used as a form of affection. So I use a pen name that I think sums me up better than my own name that lots of people may not reconize.
Ditto
Let us play
Just “let the kids play”.
Since I fear the library will close before the meeting, may I submit my two cents on your comments policy?
No limits on words; this isn’t a space critical publication.
I have always favored using real names; if you don’t have the courage to back your words then don’t say them. How would our Declaration of Independence looked if signed by “hatetheking” and not JOHN HANCOCK. The only exceptions would be: “angryfirefighter” or “angrycop”, etc.
You could assign monitors. The software you use to run this site, WordPress, allows you to assign access rights, so only those you deem “Monitors” would be allowed to edit submissions.
Although I don’t agree with everyone who uses this comment section, I enjoy reading them all – especially when I find some true words of wisdom. Please don’t do anything that would limit discussion here.
People feel more free to comment if they don’t use their real names. This is a small town and big internet. As long as everyone follows the comment policy of the Northcoast News, I don’t see the harm. You, the editor, have the emails of the posters and can take care of those who chose not to follow directions. This way you will be able to have the best exchange of ideas on this site IMO
