Radio comedy
Comically unprepared host of Aberdeen radio station 1450 AM’s “Coffee Talk” (with guest Mayor Dean Bunkers) “can’t for the life of me understand why someone would vote against an EMS levy.” (paraphrasing) Apparently, we’re a bunch of idiots, out here in the sticks. Phone 533-5259.

What the host and others failed to understand is that the city has spent 1 million more than the $261,000 the levy got them in 2009. So, how does that work? Even if the new levy passed, they would still be $620,000 short. The actions taken by the city now should have happened last year. I wonder how many special requests for budget amendments will happen in 2010? We surely saw a great deal of them in 2009. A few thousand here and a few thousand there add up. So do the lower sales tax, Real Estate Excise Tax, Gas Tax, Utility Tax, and any other tax other than the Property Tax. When you go from a two wage earner family to a one wage earner family you cut cut cut.
Then you pay for the things you need. In Ocean Shores, that will be EMS from the General Fund. All other departments will come in second.
What the mayor can’t understand is that you have to first check the money in your billfold before you load up your shopping cart with all the goodies. The city is the one that is now sitting in the checkout line wondering which of its $100 worth of items it doesn’t need, because they only have $10 in their billfold. Very embarrassing, but could have been avoided with the proper initial constraint.
It apparently still hasn’t sunk in that it wasn’t so much a vote against the EMS Levy as it was a vote against the unfettered, runaway city budget, spending and salaries.
