Cross country team to state!
From coach Rick Leighty:
By finishing third in the District IV 2B Cross Country Championships, the Hyak Boys became the first North Beach Cross Country team to qualify two consecutive years for the State. The State Championships will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
The District Championships were held in less than ideal conditions at Evergreen State College on October 31st. The North Beach boys were prepared for the adverse conditions and despite many slips and falls on the soggy, muddy course the Hyaks continued to attack the course and achieved their pre-meet goals. Ben Grover lead the way with a 7th place finish, followed by Derek Moore in 8th and Zach Deibel in 18th. All three finishes would have earned individual trips to the State Meet if the team had not qualified. The four other North Beach runners for the day also had outstanding runs with Skyler Whipple coming home 25th, Joseph Wagner 31st, Dylan Hearn 36th, and Cody James 37th.
The 3.1 mile course had been saturated by rain and started out as a very soggy sponge like surface, but quickly turned into mud on many corners and hills making footing treacherous. Derek Moore was the first Hyak to experience a fall while running in the top 5. Moore quickly recovered to maintain a top 10. Derek fell a second time but was able to continue without losing positions. Zach Deibel also fell hard on a downhill corner but continued on. Each Hyak harrier related slipping more than once during their run, but to their credit they remained focused on the task at hand and used their mental toughness to finish higher at Districts than any Hyak team before them.
Coach Rick Leighty was elated with is his runners and is looking forward to the State Meet. “The kids showed me a lot of heart today. They could have folded under the conditions, but instead they continued pushing forward while many of their opponents dropped back. That mental attitude should serve them well at State next weekend.”
The Hyaks will run at 11:30 next Saturday in a field of the 16 top 2B/1B teams and top 2B/1B individuals in the state of Washington.

I concur, “states” would seem to me like a bunch of states are converging in one location, however, when simply attending a game or pep rally you will hear chants of “on to state” not “on to states.”
I believe it is a shortening of “state championships,” thus “states.” But . . . you win, I changed it.
It is not states!!! For the last time there is only one state competition!!! How many times is this going to have to be explained?
